CBC Special ON UFC's Fighters Pay
CBC Special ON UFC's Fighters Pay
Thanks. I honestly don't understand why they don't provide benefits and pay the little guys more. It wouldn't cost them much (in light of the 10s of millions they make annually) and it would shut up many of their critics.
Dana calls the fighters who complain "greedy"
Adolf - take notice that Randy disputes what Dana is saying. He would know what a lot of fighters are making because he trains many of them. While Dana talks about the little guys making $60g a year, Randy says it is $3g with another $3g win bonus and no benefits - that they couldn't fight enough times a year to make a good living.
Randy and Mauralo (sp) say the average UFC fighter makes between $25g and $35g a year without benefits.
Dana must be pissed at Randy for this.
"We ask why fighters who risk their lives in the ring are too frightened to speak out for health benefits and better pay."
DW - "When it comes to fighting, I'm a f#cking genius"
Claudale, spare me the "risk their lives in a ring" comment. No fighter has ever died in a UFC fight. Never!
Many Timber cutters, fishermen, Pilots, Structural metal workers, Drivers, roofers, and Electrical power installers die at an alarming rate annually, but I don't see you sticking up for them and telling us how dangerous their jobs are.
Hell, today I trimmed one of my trees in the back yard, had fish for lunch, drove to our facility in Irvine and went up on the roof to check out some of the power grids. Just in my half day, I could have been killed 5 times, based on those activities. Please don't over dramatize the UFC's danger. I had a choice to not do any of the tasks that I completed this morning, as do those who choose to be a fcuking fighter in the UFC. I get it, being alive is dangerous. We get that Claudale.
Besides, we already discussed this on the Rich Franklin vs Dan Henderson blog.
The risk their lives comment was what the Canadian news agency used to summarize their video. I think Dana says badmitton can't make that same claim.
also funny how the little name guys have to say "no comment" knowing the backlash.
Randy is happy with what he makes, so he is doing this for the guys who train with him and get paid so little.
Why do you hate arguably the most important figure in mixed martial arts history, so much? He brought all the world's best fighters under one banner, (those who would sign on and face the best competition in the world) he's made many millionaires out of guys who were little more than average joe's, he's insured we would have the best shows, he legitimized the sport, what more do you want??? Let me guess, you'll order that idiot Atencio's show next weekend, even though the production is horrible, they can't seem to decide on a venue or a date, and he's lied to all of us directly about having sold more then 27k pay per views on the innagural show. I just don't understand you Claudale
Of course Randy is going to fight for the little guy to make more. As a fighterin his gym, he gets a cut of all payouts, thus making more money for himself.
Knowing that Randy is a standup guy, I think that his feud wiht Dana may not truely be over and he is able to make statements like this without feeling much backlash. He was once a low paid fight, lower paid wrestler, and knows that people compete in sports like these for the sport itself, the love of the game, the thrill or rush of stepping in the ring, cage or mat. I would love to see these fighters get benifits, better pay, etc. I also know that they get paid alot more than just what they make from the UFC. They teach lower level class in their off time, get sponsership money, and under the table bonuses that many don't see ( I have recently seen one of the bonuses first hand).
I am glad Randy is standing up for these fighters, but none of them are starving like many around the world.
Jazzwell Boxington could easily throw the fighters a bone with some benefits. I don't think it's the money issue that stops him from doing it. I think it's a paranoia about some sort of financial floodgates being opened because then the fighters just want more and more and more. I've said it before-just because he CAN do it (treat certain fighters poorly) doesn't mean he should do it, and I'm not speaking just about 'what's the right thing to do'. He could effectively kill any lingering global competition if he just treated some of his fighters better. It seems kind of short-sighted. He is the only reason all of the best fighters in the world don't fight under the UFC banner. Oh well, the product is good.
Greco - I think Randy does feel bad for these fighters, if he gets X% of $3,000 now and will get X% of $10,000 in the future, I doubt that is motivation enough to piss Dana off. He is one of the guys who was in the UFC before the Fertittas bought it and even though he is paid well, their style rubs him the wrong way.
Getting a few tiny purses from the UFC is only enough to pay training costs, hardly your employer. And these guys can't dedicate themselves completely to their fights if they need to make money working other jobs. As far as sponsorship goes, the UFC has done plenty of things to limit what fighters are getting - basically forcing sponsors to sponsor them too, banning sponsors, having them sign their rights/likeness away for little (20% of 10% of toy royalties) or nothing (video game). The screwed fighters on Xyience too when the Fertittas did a transaction that made them a secure creditor jumping ahead all all the fighters who were unsecured creditors. And Xyience was touted as part of their compensation package (and part of your prize for winning TUF).
Based on fighter comments and complaints, I don't think the discretionary bonuses happen as often as Dana likes to pretend (his example was they pay someone $50g with a $50g win bonus and he walks in and gives him another $150g).
If Dana is throwing around $150g bonuses just because someone put a smile on his face, he shouldn't act like paying for health insurance is just way too costly.
where would you like to see the money go if it doesn't go to the fighters? why not want to see the fighters get more?
