Ben Askren, who represented the United States in freestyle wrestling at the Beijing Olympics this past summer, is scheduled to make his mixed martial arts debut on February 7 in Columbia, Missouri.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com confirmed the news with Dan Lambert, the president of American Top Team, where Askren is currently preparing for his pro debut.

Askren, who will compete at welterweight, is one of the most decorated amateur wrestlers in U.S. history. He was the 2006 and 2007 winner of the Danny Hodge Trophy, an annual award given to the top collegiate wrestler.

The 24-year old was also a two-time NCAA champion while competing for the University of Missouri, where he posted an amazing record of 153-8 during his four-year amateur career. He is also fourth on the all-time NCAA list for pins with 91, trailing only Gene Mills (107), Wade Schalles (106), and Larry Bielenberg (94).

Askren is also scheduled to fight on February 26 in Miami. Already viewed as one of the top unsigned prospects in the sport, it?s likely Askren is already attracting interest from major national promotions. However, his asking price will no doubt increase if he?s able to begin his career 2-0.

As a huge Tigers fan I can't wait to see Askren bring his trademarked funk to MMA.

It says his pro debut, I wonder if he is planning on doing (or if he has done) any amateur fights prior to this.

My amateur mma debut is Feb 5th if anyone in the Chicago area wants to come

It looks like Ben is making the jump directly to pro MMA. But his first few fights will be on some fairly low level events.

Best wishes on your MMA debut, Danielle!

RE Askren's pro debut -- I was wondering if they meant "amateur" too. It's my understanding that the rules vary wildly from state-to-state. I believe here in Ohio, you must have at least a handful of amateur bouts before you can go pro... but, according to folks I've talked to here, the Buckeye State has some of the strictest controls over mixed martial arts competitions, amateur and pro.

    Merry Christmas!

    Good luck DH!

That last sentence about Askren starting his career 2-0 seems a bit out of place.

Danielle, generally I do not follow womens MMA, (I believe a womans place is in the kitchen and in the bedroom, pleasing and serving her man) but in your case, as one of our own, I am very pleased and genuinely in support of your MMA endeavors.

I have business in Chicago the week after your fight, so unfortunately I wont be able to make it. I believe you could benefit from some judo training and learning its correct application in an MMA setting. I would be happy to go over some positions with you, if you so see it fit. Further more, if you'd like, perhaps we could spend an evening on the town. We could even bring our little friend P Jersey and I'll but him all the alcohol he can drink, (shouldn't be more than a cocktail or two for a person his size).

In any event, I wish you good fortune and safety. I hope we cross paths on my trip. Cheers
