Does Chuck Liddel make a lot of sense to you?

Randy Couture: "I don't know that it makes sense...I don't know that there is any fan interest"

Come on Randy, PJersey says it would be a huge fight! He must still be recovering from the beating Brock gave him, saying silly stuff like that.

How well did Shamrock vs. Ortiz 2 and 3 do? Its not about how great of a fight it will be its about name recognition. The fighters arent very interested because they have already fought three times and the hardcore fans arent either for the same reason. But the average fan would be all over this fight as Couture and Liddell are two of only a handful that sell regardless.

It makes sense for Randy to turn this fight down as it would effectively end his career but I am not sure what Liddell is thinking. He also didnt want to fight Anderson Silva so maybe he just wants to finish out his career taking on easy opponents.

Shamrock Ortiz 2 and 3 did phenomenal numbers. Not sure what they have to do with Chuck/Randy IV in Germany, during the middle of the day and you expecting it to do Big numbers. They had to air Tito/Ken for free on Spike, (as in they gave it away). They would probably have to pay people to watch Tito/Ken IV.

At this point, Randy can finally beat Chuck. Chuck has lost his step and Randy would tko him again. Couture isn't interested in fighting unless he's making big pay per view bonuses (made over 2 mil for Lesnar fight), thus this very winnable fight makes little sense for him or Chuck either. No one will order it.

And don't get mad at me, get mad at Randy. I'm just passing on what he said.

You posted a quote by Randy saying there would be no fan interest. I replied by saying that there would be fan interest based on past history of people tuning into see the big names regardless of whether its a rematch or a quality fight.

If they showed it at night for free it would do ridiculous numbers probably even surpassing Ortiz/Shamrock and if it was a ppv it would blow away all the other international ppvs.

Chuck would ko Randy again. But in the end I am glad they are not fighting as we have all agreed with a hardcore fans perspective it is not very compelling.

PJ, you say there will be huge fan interest, Randy says there wont be.

I cant decide who to believe.

While your statement is not a joke, (I think you actually believe it) I do think you've been choked out too many times in JJ class. We'll wait for Randy to recant his silly statements I guess.

UFC thought it would do well and thought it would raise exposure.

Of course Randy would prefer to fight someone who hasnt knocked him out the last two times they fought. And of course it would sell more if it was in the United States, but it would be odd to think that the viewers would not tune in especially if it was free on spike.

Either way do you think Randy went out and did some market research to gauge the fan interest on this one? Otherwise how would he really know if fans would be interested or not? The only thing he would have to base it on is 1. Fans interest in his past fights with Liddell 2. Fans interest in his past fights in general and 3. Fans interest in the Ortiz vs. Shamrock 2 and 3 which was a much bigger mismatch and still was a huge draw to the common fan.

As I have mentioned previously the international cards have had very poor main events with nonehaving nowhere near the drawing power of Liddell.

    Penn vs. Stevenson
    Franklin vs. Okami
    Leben vs. Bisping
Cro Cop vs. Gonzaga- I remember you trying to say Gonzaga was a big draw at the time even though I dont think he had even fought on a main card previously.

Your statement is that during the middle of the day, in Germany, Chuck/Randy IV would do Big pay per view numbers. You support it with Tito/Ken III did huge numbers on prime time during a free event. Randy/Lesnar just did over a million buys (pretty Big if you ask me). Where do you see this fight in terms of "Big", 600k, 700k buys?

I can see you are trying to distance yourself from your ridiculous statements by asking how it would do on spike in prime time, but if you're going to change your position, at least say it. Say something like: "Golly, I guess I stuck my foot in my mouth again. What I meant was it would do well if it was free and in prime time." Well no $hit Sherlock, Kimbo Slice does giant numbers in that scenario. Duh!!!

Also, I don't buy into your Randy doesn't want to fght someone who has beaten him by KO theory. Chuck is a perfect fight for Randy at this stage of their declining careers. Randy by TKO (if he avoids the eye poke). Chuck can no longer stop his takedown and Chuck is punch drunk.

Finally, when you say the UFC thought it would do well, who are you speaking of, Joe Silva?

One more thing, it was CroCop that was the draw, silly, not Napao. Surprised you didn't know that. It was the feed CroCop one more guy fight and then match him up with Randy, event.

I am not sticking my foot in my mouth. I mentioned the free on spike because they have gone back and forth on the two for the international events.

I think Liddell vs. Couture would sell 400k minimum. Stevenson vs. Penn did 225 and there was very little interest as it was a mismatched lw fight and Stevenson has no drawing power. So you take two of the biggest stars ever and and it easily doubles that.

Also UFC did not really hype that fight fight as Lesnars debut was only a few weeks later and they were focusing their marketing efforts on that. A Couture vs. Liddell fight would get a major marketing push.
