Wow - I think that's an example of being talented but boring.

So he left on his own? from the title of the thread I thought he was bounced, but oh well, I hope he gets picked up somewhere else.

I would say he was effectively bounced. He was on the first fight of a new contract that was up for renegotiation due to his loss to Dos Santos and they couldn't come to an agreement. Pretty sure the ability to opt out of the contract on a loss was the UFC's option not his. Looks like they decided he was no longer in their plans for the near future and wanted to cut his salary, and he wouldn't agree to it.

Pimach - it also implies the UFC didn't want him that much and didn't have him in mind for a title shot. I don't totally blame them, I wouldn't want to see him fight Nog again and his fight with Arlovski was also very boring.

Good call Metsfan, I missed that he was in a contract already. UFC must have exercised the loss clause like you mentioned. Kind of like Cro Cop leaving the UFC; he was in a contract and the UFC said they were redoing it and paying him less, but many say Cro Cop left (he didn't have the option of leaving a contract on his own - Couture can tell you its not easy to opt out when you are a fighter).

I dont get that, why opt out of his contract especially since the hwt division is weak and yet they keep other boring fighters like Jorge Gurgel or someone who has a 2 consecutive losses like Brandon Vera around?

He's a very good fighter, although technical almost to a fault. It's great to show off your ground skills, but there has to be a payoff for the fans. Too bad, though, b/c he's likely somewhere around a top-5 HWT in the world.

Probably because the contract they opted out of was geared toward him being a title contender and possible champ - meaning it was likely a "richer" contract than they were willing to give him after losing and falling out of the title picture. I'm guessing they would have liked to keep him but wanted to pay much less than what was in that other contract - and he wouldn't do it.
