    Default Askren to ATT

2008 OLYMPIAN BEN ASKREN JOINS ATT
    Tuesday, November 04, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

2008 Olympic wrestler Ben Askren has decided to take a shot at mixed martial arts and officially joined the American Top Team, as confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Monday.

Askren, who wrestled at 163 pounds while competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has considered the move to MMA for quite some time now.

Just after returning from China, Askren spoke to MMAWeekly Radio about his pending decision to move into MMA and how working his way up to the top is very important to him.

?I?m not going to go in the cage unprepared,? he said on the show. ?I?m a worker and I?m going to work. I?m going to get good at what I do. I want to get good at jiu-jitsu, get good at striking, and I?m going to go in there prepared.?

At American Top Team, Askren will have some of the best athletes and trainers in the world to work with to prepare him for the move into MMA.

The University of Missouri wrestler, who won the 2006 and 2007 NCAA National Championship in wrestling in the 174-pound weight class, will compete at welterweight in the world of MMA and he has already worked with an ATT affiliate school in Missouri, but will start training with the main academy in Coconut Creek, Fla., beginning in December.

While there is nothing definite that Askren couldn?t go back and try for the 2012 Olympics in London remains to be seen, but for now he will work with American Top Team for a future in MMA.

Interesting - probably a good fit for him and they can learn from him too. Of course, I wish he'd stick with freestyle longer.

Another top level wrestler lost. The 2012 Olympics might be uglier for the USA.
I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Good move although in his interview after the olympics he said he had promised Max he would be at Missouri for his final two years. Max must be pissed.

Agreed, the future is not bright for USA Wrestling.
Top wrestlers are now going striaght to MMA (Rosholt, Hendricks, Phil Davis) or leaving international wrestling when they are in their prime (Lawal and now Askren). The old model seemed to be wrestlers went to MMA at the end of their wrestling careers (Couture, Henderson).

Hope they do well in MMA, but I am sad to see Lawal and Askren give up being full time wrestlers. I think they among the few US wrestlers who could have been competitive every year, but it si clear that they will not be able to be world class wrestlers training MMA and doing wrestling on the side.

Its too bad these accomplished wrestlers can't make good money wrestling. Someone like Askren is as unique as they come and could be a very interesting coach

I feel the same way. It's hard to imagine him ever as a feared striker.

I dont expect him to be an amazing striker but I can see him being an absolute phenom on the ground. I think he will be great at bjj and when he combines that with his wrestling I have trouble seeing many guys hang with him.
