Default Jacob Volkmann at crossroads for Sunday's UFC fight

Jacob Volkmann has the weight of the world resting on his shoulders.

As Kevin Iole wrote in his Yahoo! Sports column late last week, "He?s behind on his mortgage, he has a child and another on the way in November, his chiropractic business is struggling to get off the ground and his UFC career is hanging by a thread."

If that weren't enough, Volkmann is fighting Paul Kelly of Liverpool at UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego Sunday... it's the last bout on his Ultimate Fighting Championship contract... and he's lost two of his three UFC matches.

Jacob Volkmann can rest a bit easier now.

Yesterday, the three-time NCAA All-American wrestler had plenty to worry about -- a past-due mortgage, a growing family, a struggling chiropractic practice, and the threat his MMA (mixed martial arts) career was in serious jeopardy.

It appears the last concern is no longer an issue. Volkmann scored a unanimous decision over Paul Kelly of Liverpool as a preliminary event at UFC on Versus 2 at the San Diego Sports Arena in California Sunday.

He made 10 to show , 10 to win and probably around to 10 in sponsorships. More importantly he guaranteed himself another fight in the UFC. 155 is a much better weight for him although i still dont see him beating the higher level guys.

PJ, how do you see him matching up with Gray Maynard?
I pictured you as that guy Gaylord in Showboat, passing up taxis to walk because he's broke and playing it off as if it's the doctor's advice. - Clmetal

Hmm, based on how Gray has been fighting i think it would turn into a striking fight. Volkman has pretty shoddy striking, he has poor defense and takes a lot of flush punches. He has been dropped several times in his fights, but does seem to recover well. Gray has some punching power so that could be bad for volkmann. Volkman has shown more offense on the mat but i dont see one guy really controlling the other on the floor. Also volkmann placed a little higher than gray but his wrestling hasnt really impressed me in his fights, he doestn really have an explosive shot.

Id have to go with maynard by decision.
