A couple thoughts as my mind is still kind of racing:
1) I can't believe Lesnar came back from the absolute mauling he took in the first period.
2) I loved Lesnar's speech at the end. So different than a year ago.
3) If Carwin had any cardio at all he would have won that fight. I mean, the guy was basically gassed 3 minutes in. There were a number of times where it looked like Brock was open for a shot and one hard shot would have finished him but Carwin couldn't pull the strength. It's hard to believe that a D2 NCAA champ got submitted in a head and arm.
4) So strange to see Lesnar get Lesnared. Did he even land a punch? It took a ton of heart to come back from that, but he looks vulnerable in a way that he never did before. Now, there's probably not anyone else out there that can do that to him, but you have to think it will give Velasquez some confidence.
5) Sort of makes me re-evaluate what it means to "win a fight." In terms of the championship, obviously Lesnar won. But in terms of damage, like I said, I don't think he landed a punch. Right now, an hour and a half after the fight, Carwin is probably feeling absolutely fine. Lesnar will probably be hurting for a month.
6) I wonder when the rematch will be and how each of them will adapt. I'd think that Lesnar will be trying to get a takedown as soon as possible, but I'm fairly new to MMA. I'd love to hear what other people think.
Gold,
I agree with your thoughts there. I think Carwin gassed way too soon. In my opinion (I've only seen the fight once and I'm not a fight analyst), everything that went right for Brock can be traced back to Carwin gassing. After he gassed, he couldn't hold him down, couldn't fend off a takedown, and sure couldn't get out from under Brock.
If Carwin doesn't improve his cardio, everyone will know how to beat him. Make it out the first round.
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
A friend of mine who has a few MMA bouts told me that pacing is as important as cardio. No one can keep up a full speed pace for 15 / 25 minutes, like they can in a 7 minte wrestling match. I suspect that was Carwin's downfall, more than just poor cardio. He was used to finishing in the first and was nearly there with Lenar and just had nothing left in his tank.
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
Carwin had poor cardio, no two ways about it. Gassing out after one round, no matter the action, speaks to cardio issues. The pace certainly helped matters, and gassed him out quicker, but there's no way Carwin could make it through three rounds, let alone 5. His finishing power equalizes things out, but I think he'd be better off dropping some muscle mass to increase his cardio.

That's why they stop fights though; how much damage if Brock keeps choking him?
Sounds like a great fight, sorry I missed it. Anyone got a link?
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
I think carwin had a huge adrenanline dump. Hes seconds away from winning a world championship with 20 k fans going crazy and he punched himself out. I have no idea what his real cardio is like but i think its typically better than that and i think most heavyweights would gas out in a similar situation. Carwin will regret this fight for a long long time.
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
I agree with Jersey. Carwin trains at altitude and i am sure puts in the work, he just punched himself out.
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
Maybe next time he should train on the Space Shuttle, then....
Re: Lesnar Submits Carwin
He threw 70 some odd punches...not a heavyweight in the world that wouldnt be gassing after that.
