Default Ortiz vs Griffin Rematch Sells Only 62% Of Tickets

    http://www.fightline.com/news/mma/20...-2/index.shtml

Even though ?UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2? pulled in a cool $3,003,250 at the gate, the event only sold 6,631 of the available 10,762 tickets. Obviously, these were the after effects of losing its original main event only a month prior to the event.

The UFC comped 3,898 tickets while 223 additional tickets went unsold.

It?ll be interesting to see how the pay-per-view buys do as Ortiz is normally a big draw for the promotion.

Forrest Griffin defeated Tito Ortiz in a re-match of their bout at UFC 59 which Ortiz won by splt decision, prompting talks of a rubber match between the two former light heavyweight champions.

A third fight would probably need to be chaperoned by a bigger fight to make the event, so we?ll see if the UFC wants to put together Ortiz vs. Griffin for a third time.

I think the UFC raises ticket prices as much as possible trying to forecast how much they can charge and barely sell out an event.

Scalpers often don't do well because the UFC charges what people are willing to pay. when I went to the first Mir-Lesnar fight, the UFC raised prices so much that speculators ended up selling tickets for half of face and the event didn't sell out until the prelims had already started.

So the UFC might have just overestimated how much more people were willing to pay with Tito on the card and people balked.

After getting destroyed by Silva, Forrest lost a lot of promotion power. Tito has been out of the game too long and even though people like to see him fight because of his attitude, MMA is getting some recognition and people want to see the big names (great fighters). Nobody is watching the Rams in football right now except the extreme loyal fans, just like MMA. Both fighters are coming off losses and people want to watch the winners. Even Kimbo lost his growing crowd when he lost his fight to a nobody.

id be interested to see what the comp was for Machida-Shogun because DW was going cross country giving out tickets and the line to pick up comps was long as hell.

    And it didn't sell out.

I think with so many shows, people are more reluctant to pay to see all of them - seemed inevitable to me. And now the UFC has a problem with most of its big HWTs sitting idle.

In the case of LA, people can drive to LV if they really want to see a show. The UFC seems to have success in large stadiums when they come to a city for the first time (did very well in Philadelphia, Ohio, Canada).

That is awesome, Dana White and The UFC giving away tickets so people can enjoy an event that they normally would not be able to afford. Claudale you had free tickets along with Pimach as I understand it. Kudos to Mr Dana White.

Having 2 UFCs a week apart likely hurt sales as well...
