Default an Open Letter to Mr. Dana White Re: the Lyoto Machida/Shogun Rua Situation

Mr. Dana White, greetings from Los Angeles, from a fan and a loyal member of the UFC fan base. First and foremost, I want to extend my congratulations on the selection of Venues for UFC 104. The Staples Center is a Magnificent facility; a breath of fresh air compared to some of the venues in the east. The VIP treatment was absolutely top notch, and the suite which we occupied was 100% first class. I was delighted with the menu and our beverage girl was the life of the party. I was very happy to share this experience with family, friends and business associates. That is until we got to the actual fight aspect of the evening.

I cannot begin to tell you how troubled I am with the Anthony "Rumble" Johnson weight situation. 6 pounds over? I mean come on, this is the 2nd time he misses weight as a welter. I am at least pleased to know that he did not receive the KO bonus of the night, but in addition, there needs to be further penalty. I suggest a suspension from 170 until he demonstrates that he can make the weight. I'd like to see him weigh in on 2 separate occasions at scratch weight before he's allowed back to 170. And I mean for non fights. Have him come in on a scheduled date and prove that he can make that weight. That will go a long way to preserving your fan base. Believe me Dana, I heard a lot of upset people grumbling over the weight issue. I hope you make a decision here and implement further sanctions on Mr. Johnson.

On to more pressing matters, the Light Heavyweight Championship. Mr. White, that was insulting. To me, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is the uncrowned champion. I had a dozen people in my luxury suite, several of whom wagered on the fights and some enjoying their first exposure to MMA. At the conclusion of the main event, we were unanimous in agreement that a new champion had been crowned. All that was missing was for the score cards to come in and for Joe Rogan to declare: "welcome to the Shogun era." As you know, that never happened. There was outrage in Staples Center. Hard working people lost money and spent money on a product that promised to deliver. Instead they were duped. I advertised the event as the purest form of man to test himself against another. Instead, a farce was delivered.

Tonight I am ashamed of what I witnessed earlier and that I am a part of supporting it. I have had several hours to digest the events of earlier, and it is with a clear mind and without prejudice that I tell you that you are going to lose fans. This cannot remain unaddressed, or people will walk away. As it is, every last person I met, left disappointed and regretting that they paid for that abortion of a decision. It is a travesty that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is forced to leave empty handed and with a defeat on his record. This must be made correct Mr. White. I can only hope there will be a locker room bonus for Rua.

The fight in of itself was not especially exciting, and that's because Lyoto Machida ran from most of the Rua advancements. The fight went 25 minutes. The rematch promises to be extremely tactical, (to put it in kind words) and in general is probably a fight that the public will not want to pay for again. So what does one do?

The solution is as follows. There needs to be an immediate rematch. The said rematch needs to be aired for free. You did this with Tito/Ken III, citing that the fans didn't get their money's worth and thus you gave it away in order to make things right. Well, we're back in the same predicament again. Put the fight on Spike, give the fans a gift, and let's try to get this thing right once and for all. Anything less than accountability and a solution to address the problem will lead to large scale fan back lash to the tune of not supporting the UFC financially. Please do the right thing.

If there is anything further that you wish to inquire or otherwise consult with me on, don't hesitate to contact me via email. aoliverbush@yahoo.com.

Mr. White, with all due graciousness and respect,

Adolf Oliverbush
