Interesting. The formula for beating Diaz has been laid down by Guida and Stevenson. Maynard needs to play it safe and use his wrestling to smother diaz and get the decision.

A very dangerous fight for Mr. Maynard. I think Gray is a much better prospect, but this is not a good fight for him, I don't think. Still, I hope he wins, even though I like the younger Diaz.

Clearly though, the tables have turned. Now Gray is the guy with bright future and the chance at being a champion.

It sounds like the consensus is that Gray would be better served to take on a different type of opponent. The problem I have with this fight is that it does nothing to up his rank, but is a dangerous fight none the less. Risk vs reward is not good. I'll be pulling for Maynard, even though I like Diaz and see what happens.

From the ufcs perspective it makes sense. Maynard himself has said he is not ready for a title shot and does not want to be pushed just yet. Diaz is a tuf finalist and has been pushed pretty hard thus far but has had a few set backs. Diaz has submitted maynard previously so the marketing angle is there. This is a great test for maynard to measure his improvement particularly against a skilled ground fighter. We know he has great wrestling and could beat a striker but what about against a submission wiz? When i was looking at the matchups i thought the most logical fight for maynard was a fight against sherk. It would be a passing of the torch from the old guard to the new guard. Perhaps sherk is not yet healed, other than that though not many match ups were available.

Zapp is spot on with this one. From a marketing stand point sure it makes some sense. Professionally, however, this doesn't do a whole lot for Maynard and there is a huge risk involved. Maynard doesn't need tests, he needs fights that will move him up the ranks or at least be of equal benefit than the ones he's already been taking. If Diego Sanchez defeats BJ Penn, Maynard is ready for a title shot. If Diaz beats Maynard, there will be no title shot for a while. For a career stand point, I don't like this fight one bit. I'd rather see him fight Florian to be honest.

Maynard wrecks him. He has improved his standup immensely and no way Diaz will be able to take him down. If Gray is cognizant of submissions and maintains solid position on the ground, he wins easily.
