Default King Mo Signs With Strikeforce

Muhammed ?King Mo? Lawal has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce and could make his promotional debut as early as December, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The deal allows the undefeated Lawal, a NCAA Div. 1 All-American wrestling champion for Oklahoma State in 2003 and decorated international competitor, to continue competing on the Japanese circuit. There, the 28-year-old heavyweight has made a name for himself with four straight victories in the Sengoku Raiden Championship (formerly Sengoku) over the last year. Three of those wins have come by stoppage from strikes, while Lawal?s only decision came after he tore his ACL in the first round of his match with Ryo Kawamura at Sengoku ?Seventh Battle? last March.

Most recently, Lawal finished an expired Mark Kerr in only 25 seconds at M-1 ?Breakthrough? on Aug. 28.

Known for his flamboyant fight entrances, King Mo earned his regal moniker by wearing a crown to the ring with a bevy of beauties in tow.

Srikeforce has done a good job signing top talent. This year alone they have already signed:

Fedor, Mousasi, Mayem Miller, Shaolin Ribeiro, Jacare Souza, Jay Hieron, Fabricio Werdum, Bigfoot Silva, Mitsuhiro Ishida, Babalu Sobral, and upcomer Tyron Woodly as well as the EliteXC bunch. Add Dream fighters as possibles. I am sure I missed a bunch.

Now add King Mo, and you have lots of possibilities. Its really been a big year.

Below is a glance at their main contenders at each weight class.

Lwt - Thomson, Melendez, Ribeiro, Ishida, Gurgel, Evangelista
Alvarez is supposed to be contracted for one more fight and Noons is always a possibility. Dream will bring in many more possibilities.

Wwt - Diaz, Riggs, Hieron, Beerbolm, Tyron Woodley, Paul Bradley, Ludwig. Sakurai vs Diaz may surface with a co promotion w/ Dream

Mwt - Shields, Souza, Miller, Misaki, Lawler, Radach, Smith, Kennedy, Prangley, Cung Le, Cyborg Santos, Villasenor. Manhoef possible (best weight class)

Lhwt - Mousasi, Babalu, Mo Lawal, Feijao Calvacante, Mike Kyle, Aaron Rosa, Whitehead, Southworth, Randleman. Filho a possible prospect.

Hwt - Fedor, Oveream, Werdum, Bigfoot Silva, Rogers, Del Rosario, Gracie. Herman, Monson, Yvel & Lashley possible prospects. Herman vs Del Rosario would be a good glance at the future.

Actually, I find this news disheartening. I was hoping Mo would get some time to develop, but going to Strikeforce, he's going to be rushed into a fight with a guy like Mousasi by default, and that's not a fight I like for King Mo.

I doubt they will rush him. They have been pretty good about that. He should get a few cards to build toward a Mousasi fight. Coker is well aware of this and created the whole ShowXC for that reason. I think he will bypass the whole ShoXC thing after 1 bout. However, look at his stepping stones. He will be fighting Randleman at Sengoku already. So its natural he fights Mike Whitehead. After that, he could fight Calvacante. Then he could fight Babalu. If he passes those tests, he should naturally fight Mousasi. Remember that Mousasi is still a bit unknown as far as the amount of skills he has.

I love it. Mo's been running his mouth, (barely understandable ebonics) about how he's presently the best fighter in the world. This will give us an opportunity to see his skills showcased against guys who are pretty good in their own right.

LOL, well we'll definitely see that. IMO, Mo's more of a prospect than a finished product, but no doubt he's been acting like the former. If he fights top level guys, though, I think it will end up with Mo unconscious, at least at this point in his development.

I generally back all of the wrestlers. In this case, however, I wouldn't mind seeing Mo sleeping center cage. i wouldn't pay to watch it, but I'd check it on the internet shortly after it happened. The guy is such a disappointment in how he conducts himself. He has the opportunity to be an ambassador and really represent the sport of wrestling well. Instead he acts like he just sold a few crack rocks in the hood prior to his fights and forgot to shed the thug image on the way to the arena. Hopefully he matures and turns it around soon. Right now he's an embarrassment and he does a great job of drawing attention to his ignorance, (and our great sport).
    Lets go Brent!
