Default Dana Rips Strikeforce,Showtime For Signing Herschel Walker

    http://mma.fanhouse.com/2009/09/24/d...walke/?tid=sbn

UFC President Dana White says he's outraged that Strikeforce has signed former football star Herschel Walker to make his MMA debut at age 47, and he ripped Strikeforce's TV partner, Showtime, for engaging in a gimmick that makes the sport look bad.

"I think it's ridiculous," White told Mike Chiappetta on the Inside The Ultimate Fighter podcast. "People think we're anti-competition? We're anti-dumb competition. Doing stupid things like this, putting a 50-year-old guy in the Octagon for the first time, and then going out there putting out press releases like it's a big deal because you signed a 50-year-old Herschel Walker? Are you serious?"

White suggested that Strikeforce's partnership with Showtime has changed the way it does business, for the worse.

"Strikeforce is a small, little, regional show," White said. "The geniuses over at Showtime, these guys are the most arrogant, cocky, pompous jackasses I've ever met in my whole life."

Noting that Walker has no experience as a fighter, White questioned whether a suitable opponent could be found for him, and he questioned whether the fight would be sanctioned at all.

"Which athletic commission is going to let this guy fight?" White asked. "Who the f**k are they going to find to fight Herschel Walker? A guy in a wheelchair?"

In reality, athletic commissions sanction fighters with no experience all the time: Everyone has to start with an 0-0 record. And while it's true that not many of those fighters are 47 years old, not many of them are world-class athletes, either. If Strikeforce wants to make the Walker fight happen, it can find a sanctioning body and an opponent to make it happen.

But that doesn't mean White has to like it. Said White of Strikeforce's decision to put Walker in the cage, "It's completely disrespectful to the sport."

So tired of his crap. Cry baby, egomaniac

Remind me of the comments he made about Elite XC featuring Kimbo and now he's doing the same thing

While Dana is an egomaniac, I have to agree with him on both Walker and Kimbo. The reason he has Kimbo on the TUF show, I think, is to prove his point. I think Roy Nelson is going to take him down and destroy him and Dana will come out laughing. The Walker thing is stupid. Strikeforce shouldn't have to be that desperate. They are a good organization and this type of crap does make it look like they are making a last ditch effort to just make money. If you are going to sign a guy like this, you should make him fight in some regional shows first and give him some sort of kickback just to see if it is worth your organization's reputation to put on a circus-like spectacle. I personally like Strikeforce and hope that they don't NEED some sort of gimmick like this to stay afloat.

I hope you're joking about the reason JB has Kimbo on TUF. It's most definitely a ratings grab, as evidenced by Kimbo's mini-commercials embedded in each commercial break and overall prominence in the show's advertising. He's gone on record as saying, regardless of the ass-beating he takes at Nelson's hands, that he will be fighting again in the UFC. So much for the 'prove a point' theory. I'm not mad at JB for going for ratings, but Claudale's point about his hypocrisy is proven for the millionth time.
Nelson is likely a top-10 HWT in the world, or very near it, so I have a much bigger problem with him being on the show than Kimbo.

I didn't know Dana said that about Kimbo. The last thing I heard him say was that the only way Kimbo would get to the UFC was if he won the show. And of course the first reason to put him on was ratings, but who wouldn't do that? Now, if he is going to let him in the UFC anyway, then I have to agree that he is a hypocrit. I still don't think Strikeforce needs a gimmick like Walker, though.

Kimbo made half a million dollars+ a fight, was in the most watched fight in history and was insulted non stop by Dana (the real fighter).

The idea that he is taking the normal TUF road that everyone else is taking (giving up months of your life for the chance to earn $100g over 3 years) is super naive.

He was brought into the room as a special entry, he is being paid to do that show (he's not doing it simply to prove Dana wrong) and I predict he is stopped next fight (meaning he is stopped round 1 of TUF) and unlike nearly everyone in that position, ends up fighting in the UFC anyways.

I have to side with Mr. Dana White on this one. Hershal Walker fighting in Strike Force? This is too much. No way this is a good thing no matter how you spin in Claudale.

How much different is this than pro football players going strait into TUF? This is supposed to be a cast packed with talent, and besides being a great athlete, HW says he's been training for more than 10 years in martial arts.

I'm not excited about it, but I don't listen to Dana, somehow him putting Gannon in the UFC was different than Elite using Kimbo and now he is using Kimbo

We all saw Wes Shivers struggle, we've been told Marcus Jones sucks....at least Herschel Walker is a world-class athlete, even at his age. I don't love the move, but I can understand why they did it, and it seems to be getting a lot of play from non-traditional news outlets.

Walker is still supposedly doing 2500 situps and 1500 pushups daily. Not that it means anything, but I find it kind of interesting.
