I went back and watched it again just because of this thread and I can see why you would think that way, it wasnt the usual firm three taps but a weak attempt although he was going out and so it didnt pack as much.

I too don't think it was clear, but there is more than just this incident to remove Lavigne.

And there you have it. The gesture was not clear at all. One could make an argument that it seemed like he was trying to tap, but then we're getting into mind reading and seeing the future. I think that enough respected members of this board have chimed in and we agree.

BTW Pimach thank you for being one of the few who will review an incident and call it how you see it with no agenda or pre conceived bias. It's a shame we can't say the same for most on here. I wont say any names.

Lavigne isn't even the worst ref in the UFC, nor the 2nd worst, IMO. Maserati is the worst in the biz and Murgatroid is a competitive 2nd.
However, even McCarthy made mistakes. I don't think anyone is likely to die from a choke not stopped soon enough. I've been to several HS wrestling tourneys where kids bridged themselves into unconsciousness, complete with convulsions. They woke up confused and then were pissed that they were pinned, but they were ok. Lavigne is a middling ref, but this wasn't an egregious mistake.

a few random thoughts:

It would suck to be an MMA ref. Call it too soon and everyone gets mad, call it too late and you get blamed for people dying. In my mind, better to err on the side of caution.

Someone is going to get killed in the UFC eventually, good ref or not. Has to happen. I bet it's from a punch or kick, not a choke though.

I find it odd that the original article lamented the MMA fans who would be upset if Leben got killed, but didn't mention Chris Leben's family.

Zag, where do we get licensed to be a UFC official? I'm thinking of sending in my resume and improving the reffing quality ten fold once i step into the octagon.
