When I was wrestling, we were taught to "circle" around with a single leg and "hike" it downwards to take a stubborn opponent down. I'm sure most wrestlers are aware of this basic finish... however when I watch MMA fights, it seems like when the guys take a single leg (even the guys who are good wrestlers) they just run forward into their opponent instead of hiking or circling, more often then not just pushing them into a cage. Am I seeing this wrong? Is there a good reason for this difference in finishing technique? Maybe someone more familiar with MMA wrestling can enlighten me. |

I have seen a few MMA guys use the hike technique, although I agree the more typical technique is the running through the opponent. My guess for why that is more popular in MMA is because you are more setup to get guillotined with the hike and in addition, you are also more likely to end up in the guard. |

it's harder to work the hike with a good defensive opponent. whereas bull rushing takes anyone off balance and is harder to defend or counter. but when the opponent is way bigger like brock was to randy, then you are better with trying to snatch the single, circle and hike. which if i recall is how randy took brock down. from the clinch, dropped down and scoped a single and circled around then covered his hips to get him down. but he didn't keep him there long. personally i like to see the double leg to the slam.

Is hiking the leg the same as running the pipe? If so i see it sometimes one example is gonzaga taking down carwin with it.

I could see how that could open you up to a gullotine or a punch to the face though. | |

Hiking it is running the pipe. A dump would really set you up for the guillotine. If you hike it correctly, you will easily avoid the guillotine. However, it is just more safe to bullrush. There's no real technique to avoid it, and once you reach the cage, the takedown becomes easy, for me atleast. I usually just ankle pick people and can usually mount straight from that or atleast get their back. I like stand up more though
