Superfight set for January

The UFC have revealed the date of the superfight fans have been waiting for: Georges St Pierre will face BJ Penn at UFC 93 on January 31.

UFC president Dana White spoke to Yahoo! Sports to confirm the mouthwatering clash - a rematch of a previous 170-pound bout in 2006 which St. Pierre won by split decision - will be for St Pierre's welterweight title.

The fight was originally slated for December 27, but Canadian star GSP wanted to take a break after fighting four times in the last 12 months.

The new date and location for the fight will be at the UFC's annual Super Bowl-weekend event in Las Vegas.

Penn will retain his lightweight title whatever the result, and is expected to defend it at a later date, probably against the winner of Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson - set for UFC 91 in November.

"We have nothing but big fights left for the rest of the year, but this is so crazy because there are so many of them," White said. "We're going to have a retreat on Monday to figure this all out."

The UFC's schedule for the rest of the year includes: UFC 88 in Atlanta on September 6; Ultimate Fight Night on September 17 in Omaha; UFC 89 on October 18 in Birmingham, England; UFC 90 on October 25 in Chicago; UFC 91 on November 15 in Portland; The Ultimate Fighter Finale on December 13 in Las Vegas; and UFC 92 on December 27 in Las Vegas.

Agreed. That would have been a great way to ring in the new year, but still glad they finally got it done.

I beleive we are going to have a new champion. Penn will expose GSP's weakness on te feet. If nothing else, hopefully it brings to a close the ridiculous calls for a GSP/Spider showdown.

I disagree Adolf. If its a standup fight, you could be right but GSP lost to him that way last time.

I think GSP is more confident in his ability to defend submissions from the top and I think he takes him right down and spends most of the fight on top - probably stopping him before the 5 rounds is up

GSP is not going to stop BJ. He might win a 5 Round decision but no stoppage. Like Adolf, I think BJ is going to surprise everyone. I think it is one of the greatest fights in terms of talent vs talent.

I agree, I also have penn winning. Typically guys fighting penn or gsp can't match up skillwise and they rely on either outlasting them with conditioning (penn) or beating them mentally (gsp). Each fighter brings an incredible skillset and athletic ability and I look forward to a great fight.

I think BJ's quick jabs and counterpunching will frustrate GSP and take him off his gameplan. GSP's ground and pound is very strong, but he hasn't really been in a guard as flexible as BJ's (since their first fight was all stand-up). I hope BJ ends the fight with a brutal GnP and then his patented trap-arm RNC! Submitting GSP would be huge!
