Default Anybody currently competing in grappling?

Guys, I just cut from 220 down to 197 so far. I am trying to get myself trimmed down to compete in either a NAGA, Grappler Quest, or a USA grappling event.

I belong to a dojo that has just adopted USA Grappling gi and no gi. Its made up of mostly judo guys, with some of the top guys in the nation. We also have a sambo practitioner (my workout partner), a bjj kid, as well as another wrestler (state champion).

The USA Grappling rules are all new to us. However, I have transitioned to it better than the seasoned judo guys. I am also learning judo, so this is now a dual challenge for me. The judo guys are disappointed in there not being additional points awarded for throws. Even freestyle wrestlers are acustomed to it.

Anyhow, I have heard some negative things of NAGA.However, I will be honest. I want to enter whatever is convenient for my first tournament. Has anyone else competed in these?

I have not competed in naga. I just competed in grapplers quest in vegas. It was run pretty smoothly and efficiently for the most part.

I was thinking about competing in a naga in august but it doenst look like that will work out. I am most likely competing in another grapplers quest in the fall as well as the grappling world team trials in october in phoenix.

I also saw gerald harris at the grapplers quest.

I may look into starting up some grappling, watching grapplers quest was quite interesting.

the only thing grapplers quest needs to fix is running their absolute divisions at the same time as the regular weight divisions.

no sheet, otherwise PJers could have gone up against Rumina Soto in the superfight.

I have been doing a little bit of training in grapling and gone to a few BJJ classes, I am transitioning from Judo as well. The club I have been working out with, go to NAGA tournaments. If I continue to get the time to do more training I would like to try out a tournament. The main negative I have heard about NAGA is that the entry fee is $85 and one loss and you are done.

I do NAGAs, they are the best turnouts for female grapplers which is why I am a fan, but the day runs a little long.

I actually like the NAGA rules now that I have gotten used to them. NAGA is one of the only orgs that allows heel hooks and pretty much all submissions (Intermediate and over). I don't like being limited in other orgs since I am a fan of leg locks.

I haven't done a grapplers quest, but I plan on doing a local tournament called C3 and the USA grappling event in AZ, both of which have fairly similar rules.

I have done a few NAGA and Grappler's Quests. I agree w/ DH. NAGA events are the most organized, but it is a long day. I also have had a few unsponsored local tournaments that have been really good,

I noticed the scoring system for USA Grappling, NAGA and Grapplers quest all differ slightly.

It Appears NAGA scores more for takedowns.

I really think if they awarded throws (legs above the body), they would have better turnout among the judo players.
