Star Brock Lesnar: Great for UFC, Bad for MMA

Apologies aside, Brock Lesnar's post-fight antics will be water cooler talk for at least the next week, if not the next month.

"Frank Mir had a horseshoe up his [butt], I told him that a year ago. I pulled that [SOB] out and beat him over the head with it," Lesnar said before describing in interesting detail what his post-fight celebration would be.

Unfortunately, Lesnar's poor sportsmanship didn't end there...in fact, it didn't even start there.

As Mir and Lesnar met in the center of the ring prior to the fight, the former NCAA Division I amateur wrestling champion turned his back on Mir, refusing to touch gloves and inciting an already ravenous crowd.

The boo's were loud and they were frequent. And as Joe Rogan attempted to interview Lesnar after the fight, the crowd became so vicious that words could not even be heard for several seconds.

But what does all this mean for the UFC? And more importantly, what does it means for MMA as a legitimate sport?

Well, that's sort of a mixed bag.

On one hand, you have Lesnar really drawing the emotions out of those in attendance and those watching at home. It's one thing to favor a fighter or to root for someone you think deserves to win, but it's quite another to absolutely loath someone and root more against them than for their opponent. Yet, that's exactly what Lesnar had millions doing last night.

I imagine Lesnar's "heel turn" is second nature to him. Making people hate him is exactly what he spent several years doing when employed with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but that's a fine line in MMA.

Sure, it's going to make fans pay to see him. People are intrigued by large, athletic men who beat the living hell out of each other...and that will work in the favor of the UFC and president Dana White, but it will ultimately turn out to be a negative for MMA as a whole.

Those sorts of antics and that sort of hype will have people looking at MMA exactly as they do WWE. Fans will begin to think it's nothing more than a glorified Broadway show with a little bit a blood. And eventually, people will begin to question whether or not it's choreographed.

Somehow, someway, Dana White needs to get Lesnar under control and tap into what he really has to offer. He's a fierce monster who pounds his opponents into oblivion. He's a goldmine, but a loose cannon at the same time.

He could be the man that brings MMA and the UFC into the next generation or he could be the man that ruins the sport with his mouth and WWE-ish antics.

I think Dana likes it when guys are aholes and make fights personal. Lesnar can be the bad guy of the UFC (something WWE always has).

Not so sure Dana liked Brock's comments about Bud Light.

What were they? I only heard him talk about Bud Light after the fight - said he'll drink any beer and tonight he'll drink Bud Light.

I don't know where you heard that Claudale. He actually said tonight I'm having a Coors light because bud light wont pay me. In other words, he dissed the UFC sponsor straight out. Dana had to be pissed. Bud Light execs couldn'ty have been too happy with what they saw and heard.

On a night when he stood alone atop the UFC heavyweight division, Brock Lesnar?s behavior -- not his destructive, one-sided victory against Frank Mir -- was the subject of post-fight discussion on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Lesnar unified the heavyweight championship in only his fifth professional appearance, as he bullied his way to a technical knockout against Mir -- the only man to defeat him -- in the UFC 100 main event. His tirade afterward -- which included a low blow to the UFC?s primary sponsor, Bud Light, waving his middle fingers at the audience, taunting Mir and exposing plans for a post-fight sex romp with his wife -- drew the ire of UFC President Dana White.

The 32-year-old Lesnar claimed he was headed out to drink a Coors Light because Bud Light would not pay him any money. One of the UFC?s highest-paid fighters, he made $450,000 in disclosed pay for his TKO victory against hall of famer Randy Couture at UFC 91 in November.

?I was blown away,? White said. ?I don?t think in the history of the UFC we?ve had anybody do that. It?s not who we are, and, to be honest, it?s not who he is. You hang with these guys personally, and you get to know them. If he was a dick, I?d tell you right now this guy is a psycho and I don?t know what I?m going to do with him. He?s not. He?s a smart guy. The sponsorship thing was the craziest thing I?ve ever heard in my life.?

Lesnar?s antics drudged up memories of his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment superstar, when showboating and pushing the envelope of taste were encouraged and profitable. White claimed he confronted the apologetic champion in his dressing room after he left the Octagon.

?Brock went so far over the top, I can?t even put it into words,? White said. ?WWE -- that?s what it is. We had a talk. We talked like men, and he said he was sorry. He said, ?I?m embarrassed by what I said.? I take his word for it this time.?

He apologized in the post-fight presser and said he would drink any beer, and had a Bud Light with him and said tonight, he would be drinking Bud Light.
