PJ, I also took fellow New Jerseyan Edgar and the +300. Love it when a plan comes together. Also, took a few bucks from my less than knowlegable buddies..

I wasn't able to watch the fight, but I'm glad Machida won. I hate Evans; that guy is so full of himself.

Question. Why is Edgar name always associated to NJ or Toms River, i.e. "the NJ native from Toms River, Frankie Edgar ...". They don't reference home states to anyone else. Is being from NJ now a novelty?

10-15 more seconds and the roid shark was tapping to the guillotine.

They mention the little town Hughes is from too. With some other fighters (like Koscheck and Evans) they refer to places they moved to after college. (Koscheck was listed as Buffalo and Evans Michigan). In Edgar's first fight they said he was born in Summit.

About people mixing up wrestling credentials - that's the UFC's and WEC's fault as much as anyone. I'm pretty sure that Goldberg has referred to Edgar as an all-american in the past and I know they've embellished the accomplishments of other fighters as well (I think they've said Evans was an AA as well). I remember them calling someone a national champion that wasn't as well. I think they referred to Matt Hamill as a world champion without saying it was in the deaf or disabled games.

Then of course you have them referring to freestyle and high school all-americans. they would have you think Jesse Forbes has a wrestling background like how they'll describe Johnie Hendricks.

BJJ is probably the same way, I think they have world championships at different belt levels. If any of these guys won the world championships at a belt other than black belt, that's a big * just the way JUCO and D3 champs and AAs shouldn't be considered equal to D1 AAs.

Sherk has no wrestling accomplishments we know of (I assume he didn't even go to junior college) but he always refers to himself as a wrestler (I like that) and he always appears to hang with top wrestlers like Edgar and Hughes in that part of fights.

I got this from Sherk's website
"The story of Sean Sherk begins in 1973. Born in St Francis MN, Sean began wrestling at a the young age of 7. Over his 11 year wrestling career he racked up over 400 matches. In the mid 90?s he began to dabble in martial arts. After discovering the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, he began to study Boxing, Shoot Wrestling, and Muay Thai. He soon found that his wrestling background gave him a distinct advantage on the mat. His coach Greg Nelson, owner of the M.M.A.A., remembers that ?He was extremely tenacious and would never quit. ? In the year 2000 Sean continued his love for wrestling by hooking up with the St. Cloud State Wrestling team."

thanks Mark - I searched him years and years ago and remember getting sort of vague details like that. he's obviously good at it, but you don't hear about any accomplishments and I don't think he went to college either.

Of course it sounds like Hughes only went to a 4 year college (for 2 years) because he got a full ride for being a JUCO AA - fewer of those opportunities these days (his college is a recent Title IX victim)
