I think it will be a tall task for Fitch to even take GSP down, and if he does, he has proven difficult to keep down for very long. I see GSP taking this one and keeping his belt, for the exact opposite reason you suggested...Fitch WON'T be able to impose his will and rely on his wrestling to grind out a victory.

All that being said, matches aren't won on paper...here's to a great fight!
Notice I said outgrapple... Fitch is a better overall wrestler whether you want to believe it or not. But he is also a higher skilled jiu jitsu specialist. one way or another the fight will be on the ground. I am not completely sold on St Pierre. I happen to think he is mentally weaker. He has not been the most consistent fighter, and has used poor excuses in the past for it. Fitch is not the same fighter as Koscheck. GSP is the better athlete here, but we will see tonight won't we?

That part doesn't matter a whole lot in MMA. The part that matters is who has better MMA takedowns and whos takedown defense in an MMA setting is better.

GSP has tremendous setups by timing his level change really well, mainly off the threat of strikes. We really don't know if he can wrestle very well at all, (at least I don't) but he sure can exucute takedowns, we know that for sure.

This will be a very tough fight for both guys. Fitch will have to really focus on stuffing the takedown and punishing GSP for trying (we talked about takedown defense in another blog). On the other hand, Fitch will have to be efficient with his offense, hurting GSP standing whenever the opportunity presents itself, and forcing the Canadian into shots he doesn't really set up his best. Should be a great fight. I believe the welterweight belt could be staying in the US, after tonight.

Fitch - 2nd sub
Herring - UD
Florian - Don't know how, just think he will win

I agree Adolf, the belt will be going to Indiana after tonight for a while.

They train together. Like GSP, I suspect his wrestling has improved a lot since Purdue but GSP has proven to be the best (hurts me to say someone from a nonwrestling background from Canada is better than a national champ, an AA and Big 10 wrestler). GSP said after training with the Canadian national team that he had a shot to make the Canadian team - I believe him.

Adolph, it does matter because grappling implies offense and defense on the ground. I see Fitch maintaining control on top better than GSP would. I also see Fitch's jiu jitsu as an X-factor. He also has a better chance of getting out from underneath. Who knows. But I have a gut feeling.

GSP is not exactly a slow with his bjj, he has been a brown belt for a few years now. In terms of combining that with his wrestling, he has been able to gain top position control and brutally gnp some of the better grapplers including Trigg, Sherk, Koscheck, Mayhem, Serra, and Hughes.
