Default The 1979 NCAA Championships from SI Vault

Here is an article from the SI Vault about the 1979 NCAA Championships. I think you'll find the first page very interesting.

http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.c...46/1/index.htm

Here's a match between 2 1979 NCAA champs, Randy Lewis and Darryl Burley in the 1980 NWCA All Star Classic. It's a heckuva match between 2 great wrestlers.

And now, 30 years later, the refs have lost their spine and willingness to call obvious stalling, and we're back to 3-2 matches that see 3-4 actual takedown attempts and even fewer actual turn attempts on top.

Another good one Jim. I need to start snooping around the vault more.

I love these articles.
I looked up the brackets and these are the scores:

118: 16-13
126: 20-14
134: 9-7
142: 5-5, 1-1 RD
150: WBF
158: 7-2
167: WBF
177: WDQ
190: 12-5
HVY: 9-5

The amount of scoring in the finals is amazing. Must have been alot more exciting. Definitely makes me want to see stalling called alot more agressively.
To DQ someone for stalling is the NCAA finals would be unheard of today. The article doesn't mention it, but is was a Hawkeye that was the staller.
Also, of interest is that only #1 or #2 seeds won titles. All #1 seeds made the finals except for Blatnick who finished 3rd.

I remember when thet DQ'd Bud Palmer for stalling -Blubaugh went apeshot -the Palmers had been coming to his camps for years then both of them went elsewhere in college -COACH didn't appreciate either Bud or Dave after that .-but what matter of being gets DQ'd for stalling in the NCAA's ?

Some favorite quotes:

Simply put, fans got more of a kick out of 9-7 bouts than 3-2 yawners and preferred seeing pins rather than lots of riding.
Hmmmmm, sound familiar?

"The rules against stalling have been around a long time," Nichols said. "They just were not enforced. What we did was interpret the rules so officials and coaches could see that stalling had to be called more and that that was the way wrestling was meant to be."
Does anyone see that happening again anytime soon?

Not to mention, the 5 points was the fewest scored by anyone in the finals that year. This year 6 of the champs scored 5 or fewer points.

I looked up the 118 lber I went to school with -he won the 118 pigtail match 14-11 then got put out next round but Angel Moreno weighed 115 tops but you talk about a motion machine . You just don't see fun ,quality matches like he wrestled anymore .
