The women's college division has only one division. There are only 7 teams. If a DI school added wrestling, it wouldn't make any difference division wise. For there to be another division, there would have to be at least 20 DI teams, and since it's the smaller schools that are more willing to pick up on this then i don't think it's gonna happen any time soon.
It might be a good idea to support the smaller schools who are supporting the sport rather than wishing it at the DI level which is cutting men's teams at an astounding rate.

Who is to say that I am not supportive of the current smaller school teams? I actually used to assistant coach both the Menlo College and the Pacific University women's programs. All of the college women's programs are NAIA aside from Pacific (which is currently NCAA D3, but when the team was started, Pacific was affiliated with the NAIA).

I am just saying that we need to start building it at the DI level at some point since it will help to get the sport recognition as well as to help preserve the DI men's teams by balancing the gender quotas. Yes, we need 20 teams to eventually form a league, but we have to start somewhere with one team in order to build up to 20. Minnesota Morris was the first women's program, and then in 1999 Mo Valley started, and then more schools began to develop programs. But it's not as if 7 small school teams started at the same time.

So even if a couple DI schools added clubs, it would help the cause. It's going to be hard to start a DI program since a sport needs to be recognized as an "emerging sport" by the NCAA before a DI school can add a team. However, it is unclear what defines an emerging sport," and my guess is that it is numbers. So I am not sure if starting DI club programs is the answer or not.

I agree that a D1 program is one of the keys to womens wrestling getting more recognition. Especially if one of the bigten, or big 12 schools added it.

I noticed that there are currently 9 NCWA womens teams. We need to encourage as many of the mens teams as possible to help develope a corresponding womens program. I wonder if that would be a good stepping stone for the womens movement to eventually get recognized by the NCAA?

Just wondering. Has any woman ever wrestled on a men's college team at any division? Doing research for a book.
