Our team tragically lost a wrestler in a fatal accident shortly after he graduated from high school last summer. We would like to have a short memorial before our first home match. The idea of leaving shoes in the center of the mat has been brought up. Any other ideas? |

Not sure how close of a dual it is, or how much your guy at his old weight class would care... but... not wrestling a guy at his old weight class is something you could think about.

All great ideas... and I think it's wonderful that you want to honor your fallen teammate... As a wrestling historian, I would urge you to consider some sort of way to preserve his memory by asking his teammates, coaches, family and friends to either write or record (video or audio) their memories, thoughts and feelings about their friend. It would be appropriate to provide a copy of this compilation/"memory book" to his family, but, I think it's smart to also keep a copy in some sort of "archive" (the school library, and/or where sports records are kept) as a lasting legacy for future generations to see and appreciate.
