This one's new to me. Thanks for sharing.

I'll be eager to see what the rest of you think of this. As an advertising writer, I think it's a clever way to get the idea across that it's OK for real men to use skin conditioner. And it provides a positive presentation of the sport. (Unless you're offended by the idea of a wrestler using skin conditioner... or talking during a match.)

Haha, Why Shane? Its a little weird, but I would definitely say that this is a better representation for wrestling than almost all other things I've seen shown to a national audience.. Old Spice wouldn't tie themselves into a negative campaign while trying to market their product, so I don't see any real negative there at all.

The commercial made me chuckle. I guess the one other thing I immediately thought of: It's not one of those commercials/ads that confuses amateur wrestling with pro rasslin' in terms of showing a roped-off ring, moves/holds that are more WWE than NCAA, and attitudes that are more WWE than NCAA (tho these days, some amateurs seem more WWE than I'd like).

It's interesting to compare this Old Spice Red Zone TV commercial with the radio commercials played during the Cincinnati Reds games last year, which were full of weird sexual inuendo. Kinda creepy for what I perceive to be an older Reds-on-radio audience... esp for a hometown company. (Old Spice is owned by Procter & Gamble, HQ'd in Cincinnati.)

Also -- once upon a time, Old Spice had an Athlete of the Month ad campaign in Sports Illustrated -- a full-page ad for a young amateur athlete. Among the guys featured in this campaign: wrestlers Damion Hahn and Sean Hage (a HS superstar who wrestled at West Virginia).

BTW, I posted the link to this thread to a couple Yahoo groups, and someone responded that the guy who uses Old Spice skin conditioner is Greg Plitt, who was once a wrestler, and is now apparently a model with a website: www.gregplitt.com

I checked out his Resume- states that he was a 3x Maryland State Champion, #2 in the Country at 189. Pretty impressive for a wrestler turned model, but I couldn't find a single result for the guy anywhere to see when he wrestled, where in MD it was, and what publication ranked him #2 in the nation. Any information on that, Mark?

Hage is probably most known for being the first ever 6 timer in Juniors at Fargo. Metcalf became the second a couple years ago.

I was referring to Greg Plitt, the guy from the commercial.

Jacob,

It took a bit of digging but here's what I found...

Type "greg plitt" + "wrestling" into google and the first set of links all relate to his modeling career -- "most beautiful man" lists, his own website, etc.

I added "maryland" to the search and found a Maryland wrestling forum that listed him as being one of the top wrestlers at Gilman HS...

So I added in "gilman" and came up with this link for the 1996 Maryland Independent HS state tournament, where he was 189 champ

Mark

PS It's always good to be suspicious, esp when actors or pro rasslers claim amateur titles. A couple years ago, I came across a bio for a 1980s pro rasslin' superstar champ who claimed to be a Virginia HS state champ from one of the schools in the Hampton Roads area. I had corresponded with the webmaster of that school in the past, so, contacted him... and he said the pro had not wrestled at the school, let alone was never a VA champ.

Now, if we could settle once and for all the claim made by some that PeeWee Herman = Florida HS state champ ;-)

I hadn't realized that. Cool.

I did a google search on Sean Hage a year or so ago, wondering whatever happened to him, and found an article and photo of him as a student teacher, working with boys in an elementary class he was practice-teaching.
