What is most important in wrestling?
I am a first year wrestler by the way. The season ended, and I got 2 JV pins, 3 Varsity Losses, and 4 JV losses. I do not think I did as poorly as I had expected, even though I only got 2 wins.
So this led me to the question,
Is it better to be skillful in only a few basic moves from neutral, top, and bottom or just know how to do many moves from neutral, top, and bottom?
I see all these videos on this site and it just confuses me because I don't know how I will apply all of these moves in my wrestling; and if I don't apply it at all, it would be a waste learning.
I noticed some coaches teach the basics only for the entire season, but others teach a bunch of moves every day of practice.
I've had opponents do unfamiliar moves to me like tilts, different trips, and unfamiliar moves with the arm bar. I did not know how to get out of any, so I relied on my strength to resist getting rolled over to my back. Eventually, I got pinned or lasted the whole match on my belly without getting pinned.
So I don't know if I want to be extremely familiar with the basic moves to get out of it or do it or just know about many moves and how to do them or get out of it. If I learn many moves, then I will probably be not skillful with it and maybe forget it. If I only learn the basics, I will be good with only the basics and be confused with unfamiliar moves.
This is also similar to falling behind the coach not having enough time to help you individually. Or similar to being too proficient in the basics that you need to move on or your skill will be the same, but the coach won't for a while.
I see it as a disadvantage and advantage to both sides.
Any advice? Thanks
