    Women Youth Wrestling

Hi my name is Maverick Whitethorn, I am 7 years old. I go to school in Saint Paul Minnesota. I like to wrestle. I wrestle in Woodbury and South Saint Paul and at the Augsburg Wrestling Academy. I want to be a good wrestler when I grow up. My Dad met Jacob Schlottke once. I met him but I was too little then. Jacob is my hero. I want him to teach me the ankle pick. I like Augsburg Wrestling Academy the best. My coach is Ned Shuck. He is my favorite. I also like coach Sam at Woodbury and Coach Don at South Saint Paul. I went to pinnacle wrestling but I like the others better. My Dad takes me to tournaments. I won five times so far. I like the half nelson the best. I learned the leg turk too. Please tell me your youth wrestling stories.

    Thank you,

    Maverick

This last Saturday I won first place at the South Saint Paul youth tournament. This is the first time I ever won first place. I pinned all three of my opponents. This is the first time I ever got a pin in a tournament. The first opponent was a girl. I pinned her in the first period. She was not nice. She said mean things and got into a fist fight with another wrestler at her next match. My second opponent I pinned in the first period in 37 seconds. His singlet said Raptors on it. He was a little smaller than me. My third opponent was bigger than me. He was strong. His singlet said raptors on it too. I pinned him in the second period. I think the score was 9 to 1 when I pinned him. My Dad wasn't there because he had to go to school. My mom was there and she recorded it. My Dad watched it later and said I need to use the leg turk. My coach from Woodbury saw my first place medal. I am very happy I practiced at home. My coach from Augsburg wrestling academy was happy too. I showed him my medal. He taught me how to do a better half nelson and how to escape from the half nelson. Please tell me your youth wrestling stories.

    Thank you,

    Maverick

On Tuesday I wrestled at South Saint Paul and my Dad told me I couldn't use the half nelson in practice because I need to practice other moves he taught me. I did a double arm bar to a pin and a leg turk to a pin. I pinned my opponent many times. He was new to wrestling so I had to help him but he was strong. His name was Jack. He is my new friend. Next time I want to wrestle Jared. He is bigger than me and he is a good wrestler. He won first place last Saturday too. He is in 3rd grade and older than me. I think I can pin him.

I went to Farmington, Eagan and Richfield and South Saint Paul did a dual meet with Park from Cottage Grove. My Dad set up a practice day were my friends from South Saint Paul went to practice wrestling with my friends from Woodbury and then my friends from Woodbury went to practice with my friends from South Saint Paul. Next on February 27 everyone from South Saint Paul and Woodbury is invited to go to Augsburg Wrestling Academy with Coach Ned Shuck. Last night my Dad and Mom and my big sister went to watch Augsburg wrestle Wartburg. Wartburg won almost every match. My Dad told me the reason Wartburg is so good is because he is from Iowa like Wartburg.

Orlando Ponce from Augsburg won his match. It was my favorite match. Orlando is one of my coaches at Augsburg Wrestling Academy. Tomorrow my Dad and I are going to watch Augsburg wrestle Lacrosse. Can some of you guys please tell me some of your youth wrestling stories?

Maverick - I didn't start wrestling until I was in high school, so I really don't have any wrestling stories from when I was your age. Unfortunately, when I was wrestling, I don't think I was a good a wrestler as you sound like you are becoming. Please keep posting your accounts. I am really enjoying reading of your experiences.

Dear Mr. Richardson, thank you for calling me a good wrestler. I like you because you're nice and watch my experience. I want to wrestle in High School like you, when I grow up. Sometimes the High School wrestlers come to South Saint Paul and Woodbury to help coach us. They are bigger than us and good wrestlers. Your dog has a big tongue. I don't want your dog to lick me with his tongue because then I would have to wash my face. Do you know how old your dog is?

    Thank you,

Today I wrestled my friend Jared at South Saint Paul and pinned him many times during practice. I think he wasn't trying his hardest. I pinned him mostly with the half Nelson. I did the leg turk once and the cross wrist twice (I think). Some of my friends from Woodbury came to South Saint Paul again to practice because they liked it last time. South Saint Paul is going to the MYAS State team championships on Feb. 27, 2011. I think I'll be wrestling 60 or 65 lb division.

My Dad took me to see Augsburg college wrestle against Lacrosse on Sunday. Lacrosse is ranked 2nd in the nation this year and Augsburg is ranked 3rd. Lacrosse beat Augsburg at a tournament earlier this year. On Sunday they tied with each other for team points. Orlando Ponce won his match but the Augsburg coach was upset and talked to the referee. My dad said the referee gave 2 points for a reversal to Lacrosse that cost a Augsburg a major decision and team points. I met Jeff Swenson for the first time that day. I have 3 of his DVDs on wrestling that my Dad bought for me. I saw Jared Massey use the Augsburg cradle on his opponent that day. I am trying to learn how to do that move. I can do an outside cradle but I don't hook the leg under my ankle and elevate it like they teach at Augsburg. It was an exciting day today and on Sunday.

Today I went to Gopher State Nationals in Monticello Minnesota. I wrestled in the 62 lb division because my Dad didn't want me to cut weight. I weighed in at 59.5 and I ate a lot to get that heavy. My friends wrestled at 58 lb division. I lost my first two matches and was out after that. The first one I almost got pinned but was able to fight it for about 30 seconds and time ran out. I think the score was 2 to 7. The second one I think I lost 2 to 7 too. I cried but my Dad and Mr. Christopherson from South Saint Paul said I did good. My Dad let me cry on his lap with my head in his chest so no one could see me. He kept telling me I did good. Three of my friends from South Saint Paul were there and two of my friends Woodbury were there. One of my friends from Woodbury won all his matches. He is in Kindergarten. He was in kindergarten last year too. I saw one of my friends from Anoka who is really good. It was nice to see him again. His Dad is nice. My Dad invited them out to Augsburg Wrestling Academy to wrestle with us there. On Feb. 27, 2011 Augsburg Wrestling Academy is having an open invitation wrestling practice for any wrestling clubs that want to attend. They just have to send Coach Shuck an e-mail letting him know to expect them. I hope I see my friend from Anoka there that day.
