Oh my God. I went to St. Louis this weekend for a wedding and drove through New Salem today. I am so so so so so so so sad that I didn't know about this. Two of my favorite things in the whole world are wrestling and Abe Lincoln.

I hope you're right.

One year in the past, the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute & Museum website (http://www.wrestlingmuseum.org/) had a photo capturing the re-enactment.. looked like two high school-age boys, wearing long-sleeve shirts (open almost to the waist) with suspenders, in wrestler stance, circling each other... surrounded by more high school age kids in period costumes.

We'll have to see if the website posts any pics and/or video.

Jim Gruenwald and Douglas Wilson to go ‘On the Mat’ this week

8/7/2007 3:38:00 PM

This week’s edition of “On the Mat” will feature Jim Gruenwald and Douglas Wilson.

A 2004 Olympian, Gruenwald is currently the assistant Greco-Roman coach at the United States Olympic Education Center located on the campus of Northern Michigan University. In 2003 USA Wrestling named Gruenwald Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year.

Douglas Wilson is the co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College. He has been awarded the Lincoln Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of American history, for two of his books: “Honor’s Voice” and “Lincoln’s Sword: The Presidency and the Power of Words.”

In his book “Honor’s Voice” Wilson devotes an entire chapter to the legendary wrestling match between Abraham Lincoln and Jack Armstrong in New Salem, Ill., in 1831. Wilson will be discussing Lincoln’s wrestling career and the historical significance of the match with Armstrong.

“On the Mat” is a weekly wrestling radio program that airs every Wednesday night. This week’s broadcast can be heard live from 6-7 p.m. Central Standard Time. The Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, hosts the show.

“On the Mat” can be heard live on the Internet at www.kcnzam.com or locally in Northeast Iowa on 1650, The Fan. Feel free to e-mail radio@wrestlingmuseum.org with questions or comments about the show.
