Default An endangered species?

The NFL hit full stride yesterday (Go Bears!). This week's blog is about two-sport athletes.

Peace.

Excellent as always, Jim. Lots of good food for thought... esp for football and wrestling coaches.

As I do my wrestling research, I'm stunned about how many of the great college upper weights and heavyweights of the past -- NCAA champs, Big Ten champs, and All-Americans -- participated in other sports... some were shot putters, but a good number were football stars in college, and some in the NFL. But, about a decade or so ago, this seems to have ended. (Stephen Neal may be one of the last NCAA champs who played football... but, to my knowledge, he didn't play football in college.)

I've heard some discussion about increasing the upper limit of heavyweight, because now truly big gridiron guys may be too hefty to wrestle. From what you folks know, would that help the situation RE recruiting football players to wrestling?

Mark

I think it could help. At the high school I coach for (cheerleading, not wrestling), we had a kid who would have had to cut off an arm to get below three bills. Still, he wrestled to help with football and stay out of trouble, and surprisingly, we got him about 10 matches because of other kids in the same predicament. I also wonder if 215 is too close to 189.

IDK - Personally, I think 171 - 189 is too small for HS.
