Re: Olympic Judo Somewhat complex to explain, but here it goes:
A. The goal is to score an Ippon which is equivalent to a pin or a KO. As soon as an Ippon is scored the match is over. You can win instantly (Ippon) four ways
1. A throw from the feet where you throw your opponent: a. onto his back, b. lands with force, and c. you are in in control.
2. Holding opponent with his back to the mat for 25 seconds. Equivalent of a pin, but the back only has to face the back, both shoulders do not have to be pinned.
3. Submission by choke
4. Submission by arm lock
B. You get lesser points for throws that do not have all the elements needed for an Ippon. Waza-ari is an almost Ippon throw which is missing one element for an Ippon. Yuko throws are missing more of the requirements for a Ippon, Koka throws are the smallest score usually when the opponent lands on his hip. There are no scores for a straight takedown if the opponent does not land on his back or hip.
C. For hold downs less than twenty-five seconds you score a koka after 10 seconds, yuko after 15, and Waza-ari after 20 seconds.
D. Two waza-ari's add up to an Ippon and give an instant win. Yuko and Koka do not add up. Winner by decision is the person who has the highest score. One waza-ari beats 4 yukos.
E. There are a lot of different penalties that give equivalent of points, these can be very obscure, but in general are meant to encourage action. |
