Default Interview w InterMat Founder Tom Owens

    A Pioneer
Tom Owens is one of the most significant individuals in the sport of amateur wrestling from the past 15 years. No, he never won a state or national high school title, an NCAA championship, or an Olympic medal or world title. Back in 1995, Owens launched InterMat, the first independent Web site dedicated to the nation's amateur wrestling scene, which has had a significant and lasting impact on wrestlers, coaches and wrestling fans. Recently, InterMat's Mark Palmer talked to Owens about his groundbreaking Web site, and the state of wrestling Web sites -- and the sport -- today.

""There's some question as to who's first," says Tom Owens. "TheMat was online first, in February 1995. However, it was not as 'national'; it was developed in North Carolina."

    Hmmm, TheMat....
I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Sooo... just because something is developed in North Carolina, it can't be "national" ... ???? That's a darn shame.

I too found that a bit of a slap. I always referred to both as pioneers, Joe Lareau and Tom Owens, in the same breath. Without them, the door wouldn't have been opened.

I recall quite a bit of national wrestling info available on themat.com before it was sold to USAW. InterMat made the biggest push with the college scores and such, but when I was first learning about the net in high school, I often confused the sites, since the design between the two were so meager.
