People laughed at him when he made bold public predictions in high school...like how he was going to tech fall the undefeated defending state champ in the finals without nearfall. Then, while he didn't do it, he nearly did just that even though he wasn't even supposed to win. He actually scored two on accident, and let the guy get back to his base.
Many laughed at him when he would move up one or two weight classes to take on state champs or place winners much bigger than him, and laughed harder when he'd make outlandish predictions like winning by tech fall. Then he'd go do it.
People laughed at him when he said he'd win a national title in high school because he wasn't athletic or strong. Then he went and did it, throttling the field at Fargo in Freestyle.
People laughed at him when he said he'd got o Mizzou and win multiple DI titles. Then he went and did it. How dominating was he? So much so that the champ at 165 and 184 had both vacated and got the heck out of his class.
People laughed at him when he said that not only would he win the titles, he'd go down as a legend. Then he did it, as he was the most talked about college wrestler since Gable. I think what Cael did was more impressive, but it wasn't as talked about as Ben was overall.
People laughed at him when he graduated and said he'd make the Olympic team. Then they had reason to laugh harder when he lost to what was like 5 or 6 guys on the ladder. Then he beat all of them and made the team. Take away one period agaisnt Lewis, and he was dominant.
So, people laugh at his prediction he'll win the Olympics. I'm no expert, but it hasn't seemed to limit him in setting crazy goals then going out and doing it. All the open mocking does is increase his chances, and if people haven't realized by now that there is an intangible element in him that allows him do what he shouldn't really be able to do, they have been living under a rock.
So please, openly laugh at his chances. While you're at it, laugh at his potential for greatness in the UFC too, because that's likely where he's headed next. If you wanna make sure he wins, openly doubt him. To date, it's worked about perfect for him like that.
Big said his wrestling style is awkward, I think Ben would agree.

Seems to be a bit more jaded than that for Hubbard, who does start looking like a troll as time goes on. Ben got worked pretty good by Americans in the same timeframe that he went to Russia, and since I've seen him as a freshman in high school, his learning curve has been sharp, upward, and really hasn't let up at all. Being worked by anyone at that point doesn't mean much now.
I read something at Yahoo about him. A really cool person wrote it. (If I do say so myself.) And Ben has always had an awkward style. His matches nearly gave me an ulcer, even when I knew he was going to win.

Not true. Askren won NYAC tourney before he went to Russia.
As some have said, depending on his draw if Askren wins gold in Beijing it'll be the single greatest achievement over one tournament for any American ever.

There are at least 3 guys more technically sound than him, probably more. Yet I still think he will win it. Maybe the dude should get into a sales job because I believe him when he says it.
