Default Young Olympians

Looking at some of the qualifiers in other sports, I keep seeing several Olympians who are 15 or 16 years old. This is especially true in women's gymnastics and figure skating. What stinks about that is I think it's kind of taking away the tremendous accomplishment it was for Dietchler to qualify at 18. In the wrestling world we all know how rare that is, but to the rest of the public it's not as big of a deal because there is younger in the more mainstream sports.

i completely agree with you. Although most of these athletes start at an early age, for Jake to make the team in wrestling (hitting the wrestling scene quick) is such a huge deal that many in other sports do not understand. Gymnast have always had young participants due to size.

Deitchler is getting a ton of press right now. Most of the articles or video clips have stated this is the first time in 32 years a high schooler has made the Olympic wrestling team and only the third one ever. I think most of the media outlets realize how rare this is compared to sports like gymnastics when you are washed up at 17.

It is rare because it is a contact sport.

First, its only women's gymnastics that has 16 year olds. I believe for men its rare to have 16 year olds competing in Olympics.

Women's gymnastcs is like any other thing about American female beauty ideal. They look pretty and they can do cute things but they are still little and weak compared to an average man.

I am no expert on gymnatics but I suspect all the little girl gymnasts would not fare so well if they had to do rings and parallel bars like men.

Pound for pound means nothing. Say a 180 pound man fell down on the street. There is an 80 pound girl gymnast and I rushing to help him up. Pound for pound little girl's strength will not do much whereas I will be very effective. The same to fight off a robber or a molester and so on.

Like I said, they do cute and impressive things but so does Angelina Jolie to men's heads. She is worseless for physical work though.

I think the media coverage he's getting is awesome and something this sport needs. It's the public that I don't think completely understands it when they compare it to some other sports.
