Default Coaching and the Olympic atmosphere

Do you think the Olympic Coaches help prepare for the atmosphere of the Olympics?

With a youngster like Deitchler on the team, do the coaches try to explain what the atmosphere is going to be like in an event of this magnitude or do they just ignore it and hope he doesn't even think about it?

I think in some sense they have to.

First you are traveling to another country where things will be very different. I don't think you can ignore the differences of the Olympic Games. The good thing the coaches have been there and know what to expect. That is just as important in preparing their athlete for competition.

I dont think telling them does much of anything. Thats why it is important to get out and compete abroad.

Which is why it's great Jake competed in the venue where the wrestling will be held. He thought that familiarity with the venue, the travel, the food, etc will be helpful.

Yeah, he was there last year, right? That will definitely make him more comfortable.

I agree 100%, once the match starts you forget everything else, but if your nerves sap your energy up to that point, it won't matter what you're focusing on during the match.

I know a guy who wrestled in the Olympics, and his event was one of the first ones. Wrestled the first couple of days, then had the rest of the Olympics to enjoy himself around the village. That'd be fun, unlike for guys like Daniel Igali, who wrestled on the last day of the Olympics. Imagine training and keeping your weight down for the whole thing, no time to relax.

Fortunately wrestling is wrestling no matter what country you may be in. Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal what venue you're in, because unless you're in a dual you're not very likely to be wrestling somebody with a home crowd advantage. And if you are in that kind of a dual one of my favorite things is to be able to shut up a home crowd. For the Olympics though, I'm sure it would be a big pressure situation, but my opponent would be in the exact same situation so I don't think anybody in the Olympics has an advantage unless they're from Beijing.
