"If you want to coach you have to know how to wrestle: Beloglazov

Most important quote right at the end of that interview.

You can be a great wrestler and a bad coach but to be a truly great coach, the one that produces World and Olympic champions year in and year out, you have to be a well rounded and accomplished wrestler first.

I'll tell you exactly how the Russians train, non stop. They work on a move until its perfect and then move on to the next.

Dan Russell tells an outstanding story about the Russians back when he was over there wrestling.

While trying to make weight and working out, Dan would go work out for hours at a time, then go check his weight. When he originally checked it, he noticed some Russians(youth keep in mind) working on some underhook stuff. Anyways, Dan goes and works out for about 2 hrs and comes back to check his weight and notices that these same two wrestlers are still working on the same underhook series. He goes and works out again for about another 2 hrs, comes back and notices the same two still working on the same moves. He does it a third time and the same thing.

The Russians are completely focused on perfecting every aspect of their skills. They work non stop on the same stuff over and over again.

Americans don't quite have that down. We work on a few things for a few hrs and think that's good. Maybe later on in the week we come back to it and touch back on it. All the while not really even mastering the move. Its all about repetition and muscle memory. Can you imagine trying to get your kids to work on the same move for 6 hrs straight? How about even 1 hr straight? Our kids just aren't focused enoough to work on something for that long. Now if you get them at a young age, keep them from video games, candy, watching tv all the time, then maybe, but not highly likely.

The reason why we can walk, talk and shit so well is because we do it everyday. The Russians walk, talk, shit and wrestle so well is because they do it everyday.

You are exactly right, wrastler118. A friend of mine is a former Russian master level wrestling coach. He can't understand why our kids don't wrestle 12 months out of the year and why they waste time playing other sports in the fall or spring. He and I often debate the role of sport in one's life, and whether it's better to be totally focused or well rounded. The Russian mindset is total dedication to excellence.

He's exactly right on their mindset. The results speak volumes. Just imagine if they were still the Soviet Union and how much more they could've dominated now.

Actually Spider I have to correct you a little bit. Russian wrestlers are often good at 3 or 4 sports. Beloglasov for example was good enough to play soccer for one of the best teams in Ukraine I believe. If you ever saw him when he did camps at Blair he is also an excellent basketball player for his height. Most Russian wrestlers are great swimmers. Those from cooler regions usually can hold their own in hockey and skiing.

Russian system places emphasis on using other sports for warm-ups during practices for like 20 minutes to half an hour and for “active rest” from wrestling as they call it. Usually 2 days a week are spent playing soccer or other sports for about 1-2 hours.

I trained in Russia for 4 years. When I came to America I was good enough to make varsity soccer team at my high school. In Russia I was the best cross country skier for my age in my school out of 60 people. My parents and I went cross country skiing every weekend during the winter which is 6 months in Russia.

BTW, careful Spider when you say I'm right about something. That would mean I know something about wrestling.

My high school wrestling coach is also a good example. He was born in Siberia and moved to Belarus where he was a Belorussian National champ in wrestling. When he came to USA at 25 years old he played soccer with my soccer high school team. He was by far the best player in the game. I also timed him when he ran 800 meters in under 2 minutes. How did he get so good at track and soccer if he was a wrestler?

Not surprisingly he is now a soccer and a track coach at the high school in addition to being a wrestling coach.

Or it would mean that I know enough to know that you're right.

I'm just repeating my Russian buddy's philosophy, and he was a very respected coach in Russia.
