Re: Was the Cejudo experiment a bust and other questions?
Cejudo is only 20, or 21 years old, he's got some quality wins on his record, he's still improving, and barring injury going to be in the game a long time. Definitely not a bust.
I don't quite get how one would figure we're getting worse at Freestyle over time either, we put three in the finals in 04, and then after the doom and gloomers came out in 05, we went and brought home four medals last year. We'll be fine.
Re: Was the Cejudo experiment a bust and other questions?
The Mat, there was a thread about how people though his side of the bracket was pretty weak compared to the other side and felt it was a cake walk to the semis.
Several other forums I read said the same thing.
And of course I understand its Worlds, but this kid was supposed to be the biggest thing since sliced bread, kicking every Americans ass along the way to his spot on the team and folded when it counted most.
Here's my thing, I think he should've went to college first and got his four yrs in and then make the jump. The reason being is that he just doesn't get enough real matches in at tournaments wrestling at the OTC like he would at the college level. He could have close to 150 matches in while at college, plus whatever he got in the off season versus the maybe 50 or less he's had since HS. Big difference. Helps with Maturity, gives him extensive mat time and being used to wrestle in front of big crowds.

College isn't for everyone. Henry did what's best for him, and it is WAY too early to tell if the "Cejudo experiment" was successful.
Re: Was the Cejudo experiment a bust and other questions?
Indeed, and if you're going to base your take on some one off opinion at the "land of the extremes" (The Mat) you probably aren't going to get a good read on some one.
Henry is great, but he's still arguably not even the best 55'er in the USA, he needs to either beat Sammie, or Sammie needs to officially retire for that to be true, at least in my opinion.
Harry Lester didn't go to college, didn't place in his first Senior Worlds event (05 I believe), and he's now come back and medaled in his two subsequent appearances. Henry is going to be fine, he's seen solid success thus far, and he has a bright future ahead of him.

Oh sure, that makes a lot of sense. Lets wrestle a different style, instead of doing it like... well, maybe Russia.... does it. Because our system is so very much superior.... never mind the Russians are absolutely destroying us, and win worlds virtually every year. And while we are at it, lets ignore what our greco guys are doing, including one Henry Lester, who also skipped the DI thing, and is now a perennial placer. And lets have a wrestler like a Cejudo get out of college, train and make one Olympics, then bail because it is time to move on (like Cael Sanderson) instead of having a long and great career.... like a countless number of Russian/Soviets. I mean our system must be superior no matter what the actual results are because it is American afterall and everything we do is superior.
I like your logic.
