No they got rid of the bad mark system in the late 70s or early 80s. Smith wrestled under the good point system.

win by fall - 4 points
win by technical fall - 4 points
win by decision - 3 points
if you lost but scored on your opponent you'd get 1 point.
There may have been an additonal half point for an 8 point margin (e.g. 3.5 points). Not sure.

Smith qualified for the Gold medal match because he had a technical fall over Azizov (4 points) and Azizov beat Reinoso by decision and Reinoso scored (3:1), Reinoso beat Smith by decision and Smith scored a point (3:1).

Add up the points:

Smith - 5
Reinoso - 4
Azizov - 3

Got it.........knew that it changed someplace but still allowed wrestler to advance if they won their pool even if they lost. At anyrate, I like a system that allows for a bad match and still rewards consistancy.

Yeah the point system isn't that bad, as long as its a good match im happy.
