Terrible news, really hard to believe considering that he was a 184 pounder in college. But then again that was a LONG time ago. One of the most exciting American wrestlers to watch and a decent chance at a medal. Sucks sucks sucks...
The guy had the weight to lose, instead he dehydrates himself so badly his kidney stops. That is beyond stupid and really, really, bad for the sport in this country.

He could make the weight easily if he had any discipline.
This is the national team, for God's sake. Don't the coaches/staff weigh these guys in and out for each workout? Are they not given specific instructions regarding what/how much to eat and drink? Don't blame it on just the sport; Athletes in other sports, whose intake does not match their output also dehydrate; just look at marathon runners, for example. Yes, the athlete himself may be at fault, but how much help was he getting from national team staff? Just about every elite athlete, but particularly weight-dependent athletes, need very specific dietary guidelines. Does our national team have a dietician? If not, they should!!!
If any Eastern block wrestlers have trouble with weight management, FILA will change the weigh-in procedures. If not, the Americans will likely continue trying to take non-disciplined short-cuts to make the weight. Is this just an American problem? We also had a boxer at this Olympics who passed out trying to make weight on August 8th, causing him to miss the Olympics, although he did not have to be hospitalized.
i truly believe that there is no difference in the problems a coach faces between teams at different levels as well as the non sense and trickery a wrestler will attempt.
it's common for a high school coach has to worry about his wrestlers eating properly, managing his weight, training hard, being a good partner, getting to practice on time, ect. a college coach should have to worry less about those things. tho open coaches even less. most people would never expect that an olympic coach would have the same problems. apparently they do. it's sad. but i blame the coaches if they didn't address the problem in a serious context.
