If wrestling were like swimming, track, gymnastics......
Wrestlers would get a medal for winning each match. No points scored on you gives you a Gold, silver for winning 2 periods to none and bronze for winning in three periods. Each period would be like a qualification for the final in swimming. Each opponent requires a diffrent strategy kind of like 100 and 200 m freestyle in swimming. Some wrestlers you need to beat quick while others require more endurance.
So an Olympic finalist would be able to win up to 5 medals with another medal for an overall tourney win.
Then there would be a competition with one period on top. Each wrestler gets one minute. Another medal.
Then, each wrestler gives up a leg 3 times. Another medal and so on.
See in wretling you could also come up with clever ways to win many medals like in track, swimming and gymnastics.
I DON'T BUY 8 MEDALS IN SWIMMING but not in wrestling.
Re: If wrestling were like swimming, track, gymnastics......
If only the Ancient Greeks were around to see how today a swimmer or runner has a higher status than a wrestler. In their days the wrestler was worth 3 times the value of a runner/swimmer - both in society and on the battlefield!

I think a better analogy would be that there would be more styles of wrestling, like in the sports with multiple events. I don't see any wrestlers winning medals in both greco and freestyle presently and I doubt they would be doing it if there were even more styles. The value of a wrestling medal is clearly head and shoulders above those other sports.

I agree with swimming but not in Track & Field, where it is quite a feat to double gold in individual events, except if you are a US sprinter, historically you are almost assured of winning a relay Gold. Obviously this year put yout money on Jamaica.
BTW, athletes in almost every other sport have no chance of multiple gold.

There is no 200 relay. There is a 4x100 and 4x400 relay. And while what you said is possible its never been down.
I could say you could weigh at 60kg & 66kg and wrestle FS and GR and bring home 4 Golds.
My real point is that it takes an extraordinay Athlete to win multiple Golds or even mutlple medals (Usain Bolt), in swimming it very common for mutpile medals, but besides Gymnastics I can't think of another sport where this happens.
Re: If wrestling were like swimming, track, gymnastics......
I think you guys are missing the basics here. It's teh level of respect the wrestlers have for each other and the tradition of the sport. This sport is a true fraternity in and of itself. I just watched the 74K final and then the medal round. Now perhaps I am wrong (hard to judge a man after watching only ten minutes of his actions) but Saitiev's actions during, and more importantly, after the match show his level of respect for the sport. It didn't appear for a minute that he put himself above it all, despite his incredible accomplishments. Would you see a US basketball player do the same after winning gold. I think not...
I don't yearn for more recognition, as long as we understand the level of sacrifice and accomplishment, thats enough for me.
Congrats to Askren and Schwab for getting there and representing us. How many would give and arm and leg just for that opportunity. Not sure about schwab but Askren will be back and better next time.
BTW- Has anyone retired their boots to the center of the mat this year? If so who....

It's more likely to medal in the 100 and 200, and even that is really difficult.
Measuring your sport by another sport is futile and a waste of time - no wonder you like doing it, Big. Yes, swimming gives out lots of medals because it fits well to the nature of their sport. But don't, for a second, think that winning eight golds is easy. There is a reason why it hasn't ever happened before. The fact that you have to belittle other sports to make yourself feel better about wrestling shows that you have a lack of confidence in wrestling. Just enjoy that there is all this awesome wrestling going on.
