Default Upper limit on weight?

(Sorry if this is a stupid question.)

According to Wikipedia, you cannot weigh more than 120kg if you want to wrestle greco/freestyle. Is it just my bad memory, or didn't it use to be that the highest weight class didn't have an upper limit? Like in boxing, where anything above a certain weight is simply heavyweight?

I'm no wrestler but I've been wondering about this for quite some time. I've googled but I haven't found anything.

I know in College wrestling there was a time when HWT was unlimited. I'm not sure about Freestyle and Greco. I think the weights have changed for sure. I don't remember Rulon Gardner weighing 264 pounds.

You have to be 264 or under. Seriously though hwt wrestling is brutal.

Im pretty sure there was once an unlimited weight class, remember the Wilson throw, no way was that dude under 300lbs. the 264 limit was done inthe last 8-10 yrs, because I remember heavyweight was 286 when I got out of HS about 15 yrs ago.

H.S., college and international were all unlimited at one time.
Chris Taylor weigh in excess of 440 pounds both his junior and Senior years at Iowa state as well as when he wrestled both FS and G-R in the 1972 Olympic. Jimmy Jackson weighed around 350 when he won his 3 NCAA titles as well. ADam Sandurski(sp?) of Poland was well over 7 feet tall and 300 plus pounds when he wrestled internationally

Wasn't the HVY limit dropped right after Karelin retired (2000)?

I remember our poor heavyweight in high school. He weighed about 230 and was constantly going against guys 275 to 325. He said sometimes he had trouble getting his arms around their legs when he tried to shoot.

So there once was an unlimited class where there is now a limit? Does anyone know why the limit was introduced and when?

Someone said that the limit was *dropped* in 2000 when Karelin quit. Is this really so? If so, it must have been re-introduced afterwards, since there now IS a limit, right?

Limit dropped meaning it was made lower.
