I think that was a result of the bracketing as well as the wrestling style of women. First, you had Merlini and Icho meeting in the quarterfinals. Those two wrestled eachother for the gold medal in 2004. Same thing happened with Verbeek and Yoshida at 55 kg who met in the semis instead of the finals. So tougher wrestlers met earlier on.
Second, women tend to wrestle more balls out rather than the men who have a more conservative style. That results in more scoring, but also opening yourself up to more dangerous situations that result in the pins. The Colombian woman at 55 kg was a good example of this style. She went for some really huge moves like a double overhook throw, but also left herself open to being scored upon a lot because of it.
As for me, I prefer to watch the women since there is more action.
