He took gold in 2004 (84kg). I know he wasn't as dominant in international competition as he was in college. But, I thought for sure I would see him on this team. If anyone has a brief history of why Cael is not on the team, besides the obvious that he wasn't good enough, I would love to hear it. Thank you,
He retired and is now coaching Iowa State.
Appearantly he reached his goal of an Olympic gold and did not have the fire left to make the continued financial and personal sacrifices required to compete at that level.
Understandable, but disappointing from a US fan's perspective.

Thank you. What an immense talent. Often referred to as the "next Dan Gable", he had the talent, but apparently not the drive. I'll never forget his college accomplishments and am very glad he was able to win a gold.

What did Gable do that Cael did not?
If I recall. Gable kept wrestling because the US boycotted his first Olympics.
Hey, when people get married, priorities change. I have no problem with talent that leaves at the top of their game, though I do wish Jim Brown had hung around a few more years. (hint, hint, Mr Farve.)

I think saying Cael didn't have the drive is asinine. He won 4 NCAA championships, a gold medal, and now has the drive in coaching. I seriously want to smack people who say crap like that because it's just so stupid.
Gable and Sanderson competed the same number of years in freestyle, didn't they? Gable won a WC, the Olympics and retired. Cael Sanderson lost in the WC finals, won the Olympics, and retired.
