    Heavyweight or lightweight might be possible. Definitely not in Ohio.

    He was 160. A football player and a good athlete that was extremely strong. No I'm not the greatest coach, nor am I from Ohio. But, I can stick to a plan and I can get my guys to pin. If you can get a kid to buy into your system and he has a little success his confidence grows and he will work hard. Once he believes he can win he becomes very dangerous.

    He had a double leg was extremely explosive and he was tenacious for 6 minutes. In addition he conceded nothing and was hard to take down. Certainly hard to teach kids tenacity. Wrestling is a controlled fight. Not many high school kids can take 6 minutes of continuous pressure and pin attempts.

    Mental preparation and the mentality that even if we are down big we can pin and win helps my team win matches. The pin is the great equalizer. I love Gene Mills mentality. "You may not be able to beat everyone, but you can pin anyone." and "If he doesn't want to get pinned, you have to change his mind." Nick Purler's technique combined with Gene Mills belief that you can pin anyone works for us.

    I totally agree with the idea of pinning.

    My son started this year. He is 11 and started after the season started. His wins were all pins with him starting on top at the beginning of the second period. Once a kid believes can win he becomes so dangerous. Getting that belief is the key.

    Also agree with the idea of mastering or at least achieving a high comfort level with a few moves and concentrating on stance and defense. That is why being in a room with a bunch of experienced and tough wrestlers will allow someone to become good much quicker.

    If your opponent can't break your stance it is very hard for him to score. Daniel started on top most second periods and the kids would get pinned or he'd just choose top in the 3rd because he was so confident he could pin them. Towards the end of the season coaches would not let their wrestlers choose bottom because they knew they were in trouble.

    The guy you are wrestling can know a million moves, but if he can't break your stance he will rarely score. The NCAA guys aren't stalling when they are wrestling there are just so many guys with great defense(great stances) that it's very difficult to score. So they try to force scramble situations to get their opponent out of their great defensive position.

    Slow the match to your pace or push the match to your pace whichever favors you. You have to develop your own style.

    This will be my first year of wrestling too. I am a sophomore btw. Luckily I have an older brother who was a very good wrestler, and is teaching me alot. We have been practicing for about two weeks with wrestling and getting in the best shape that I can. I think that i'm naturally a pretty good athlete, so I won't have a problem with that. For the first couple days all we did was work on the stance, and then he taught me a few take downs. Around when the school year starts, I plan on going to some open mats with some friends that I know, so I can practice with people more my size.


    And to coach bull. Since you're a coach. Do you care if your kids cut weight? I know that a kid at my school got kicked off for cutting to much. So can you just give me your thoughts and what is ok and what isn't.

    I am not a fan of weight cutting. Two things to note. 1) I don't tell kids what weight they will wrestle. I let them and their parents decide. 2) I think kids perform better closer to their natural weight.

    Some of my kids lose a good amount of weight once the season starts. Not on purpose, but because the amount of work they do in the off season is no where near the work we do in season. So there is some natural weight loss that comes into play. I guess a good example is my heavyweight last year. Started the season at 255. But he was also 27% body fat. He did drop 20 pounds during the season, but he ate everthing in sight. His mom was happy he graduated and went to college because he was eating her out of house and home. I will not ever advocate excessive weight loss. I guess the next question is what is excessive weight loss. That is a tough question. 5% of your body weight would be acceptable if you are at 10% bady fat or greater. So that looks like 5 pounds on the bottom end of the weight classes and 10-12 pounds on the top end. Those figures can certainly go up with kids that are morbidly obese. 214lb kid a couple of years ago dropped to 180lbs during the season. He ate healthy, ran daily, practiced and just dropped the weight. He is now a member of the cross country team to and walks around at a much healthier 178lbs. Body fat is now in the 12%-14% range. He says he has never felt better and is in fantastic shape.

    I hope I answered your question. A kid with high body fat (>20%) can lose more than a kid with very low body fat (<10%).

    If you are willing to learn and if you are committed to being in better shape than your opponents then you will have success. I would make a point to Run and swim as much as humanly possible from now until wrestling season. Eat right and exercise a lot. You do not need to worry about your weight. If you eat a healthy diet (cut out the pop and junk food) and exercise a bunch your weight won't be an issue at all.

    I personally believe that if you are in better shape than your opponent you can win a lot of matches, even against better wrestlers. Just get them into the third round and they're all yours.

    As far as specific exercises go I would suggest a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic exercises both. Get to the point that you can RUN, not jog but RUN for six straight minutes. Do a mix of wind sprints and distance running. I like to run along the roads and do something like jog for the length of two telephone poles and then spring the next one or two. You can set up the ratios yourself and vary them accordingly. The same thing could be done if you would prefer to run on a track. Simply run two or three hundred yards then spring the next 100-200.

    That is very sound advice. I took over a team last year and I did not teach a bunch of moves. I tried to get my kids to focus on perfecting two or three from every position (up, down, neutral and pins). If you can perfect a couple of moves and make your opponent wrestle your match, you will find great success. Good luck and good advice coach.

    My suggestion is to do some running, both long distance(3-5 miles) and sprints, pushups, situps and jump some rope to work on quickness. You will get work on the actual moves and how your coach wants you to do them when you get to practice. the MMA training will def help you.
