When talking about the top tier kids, PA and OH are back and forth, with NJ on their tail, IMHO. CA lagging a little behind them.

But for pure depth, PA is a cut above. It's purely depth. But a 5th or 6th placer in PA is generally one top hombre.

Hey, Ed Ruth never placed higher than 4th. That's depth.

Minnesota does well consistently and has won some national titles and is (21) in population wise.

I'd say that give Minnesota some high standing in the quality of wrestling done here.

I also understand that many of those powerhouse high school teams from out East are private schools and academies. I think that those schools are free to recruit kids. The big powerhouse schools in Minnesota are public schools.

Is Minnesota the best in the nation? When population size is taken into account we are near the top.
Private schools and academies are a non-factor in PA wrestling.

Actually, it's tough to say that PA even has powerhouse teams. The talent is more or less spread out, which in turn accounts for the depth.

One exception my be Easton (which is public) out east. They have long been accused of recruiting and are also probably the most hated team in the state because of it.

The top 4 states most years are going to be PA,OH,NJ,CA. These 4 states take turns winning senior nationals. They all have some great programs and wrestlers, just depends on the year who is going to be the best in the country. I think CA,PA, and OH are top 3 with NJ being just behind these 3 states. CA has the hardest state tournamnet to win hands down, having only one division and number of schools. I would never count out a state placer from any of these top tier states tho, placing in OH,PA and CA is no joke. One thing i can say about MN is they have a great Greco program and always have some of the best greco kids in the country.
