Having never wrestled in PA or any other area in the country other than Ohio, I can only speak of the best areas in OH. However, having competed against teams from the Ohio Valley region and then also competing against guys from the Cleveland area, the Cleveland area proved to be far superior. I did quite well against the Ohio Valley boys, but really had my hands full when I went up north. Just a different level of wrestling than the rest of the state.

I guess I am confused then because if all of the highschool talent is in Ohio, NJ and Pennsylvania, why do they have to leave those states after highschool to get good college coaching? Okie State, Iowa, Minnesota?

(Just waiting to see how long that sits there before the hail storm rains down on me.)

I will answer it myself then. Consistency.

Those three programs continue to be consistent in terms of their coaching staffs and their programs. They run GREAT camps and recruit directly from them.

They do a nice job of keeping their home grown talent and then recruiting their needs out of state if need be.

Don't get me wrong, I see a whole new horizon coming where Ohio State starts to make a major push into these other programs for a sustained period of time.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Wrestlers don't want to go somewhere to become an all american. They want to go wrestle for a coach that will help them win a title. Why else would the 5 guys from Iowa give up a year of eligibility to follow Tom Brands from VT to Iowa? They know what a coach can do for you. Like you said, Ohio State will start to become a national presence and this is due to their top notch coaching staff. That is something Ohio State was missing for quite some time and something Ohio U still is.

Only because I'm feeling cantankerous:

2008 NJCAA National Champion - IOWA Central

# wrestlers from OH or PA scoring points for IOWA Central - 0
# wrestlers from IA scoring points for IOWA Central - 4

2008 NCAA Division III Champion - Wartburg College, Waverly, IOWA

# wrestlers from OH or PA scoring points for Wartburg - 0
Every point for Wartburg was scored by a wrestler from IA

2008 NCAA Division I Champion - University of IOWA

# wrestlers from OH or PA scoring points for University of IOWA - 0
# wrestlers from IA scoring points for University of IOWA - 4 (and I'm not counting Charlie Falck, who is from Strawberry Point, IA, but wrestled at Apple Valley, MN).

Conclusion - if you want All-Americans, recruit from Ohio or Pennsylvania. If you want national team championships, recruit from IOWA.

That took 7 minutes. I don't know. I'm sure that OH probably leads the nation. I'm just trying to have a little fun. My statistics don't really prove anything. I just always love these "my state is tougher than your state" arguments.

That's is cool...I just love my state also and was sticking up for it.

There are a lot of great wrestling around and I am sure that everyone can make a claim, excluding states in SEC country. LOL

well.... we may not produce the best wrestlers in North Carolina, but we provide two of the best tourneys in the country: Southern Scuffle for college and Super 32 for High School!
