After Apple Valley defeated Waverly Shell-Rock 36-30 in a dual last weekend, the Eagles have positioned themselves among the nation’s top 3 teams.

I don't recall them ever cracking the Top three before. Meaning #1 or #2. Pretty nice accomplishment especially when you see that they really won't lose too much again this year.

In 2000 when Apple Valley lost to St. Eds, we may have been #2 at the time (or so I remember hearing- AWN's rankings were not as easy to find then)
I think they are a top team, but I've always wondered how their unheralded wrestlers would fair in a major dual.
When I went to AV we used to have to take on Dowling of Des Moines. They were pretty tough back then. Anyone know what has happened to their program lately?

Coaching change. I coached their for 3 years. Dowling is a private school that does not give scholarships or have the financial backing to draw top kids to the program (as they did in the 80s-mid 90s). They have amazing facilities though, and may in a few years build back up.

Apple Valley is always tough and Hastings is a rising star! It is great to see Minnesota with 2 top 20 ranked teams!
The midwest and east coast seem to have the most top teams. I am surprised to see so few from the west coast. Is wrestling not as big of a sport in that part of the nation?

No, wrestling is definitely not as big on the west coast. California produces some good wrestlers, just because of sheer size.
