Re: freshmen year my freshman year I didn't know as much as I needed to know but I had already come up one year early as an 8th grader to start sparring with some of the more experienced wrestlers. i basically got my tail kicked in but i got into a routine, stepped up my cardio and saw how the other wrestlers got ready for matches...i kept wrestling for the middle school as at our school if you didn't crack varsity as an 8th grader than junior varsity was also not an option...i happen to agree with this methodology.
i knew a good series of single and double leg takedowns, some upper body throws, a standard fireman's carry, anklepicks, ducks, front heads (cement mixer), snap downs etc.
my real weakness was that most of my coaches growing up didn't teach anything about working the edges of the mats, strategies when choosing top or bottom and did very little scouting. much of that has changed and i learned much more about this when i moved from st. louis to apple valley my sophomore year.
