    Default Wrestle with Thumb Injury?

I hurt my thumb at practice like some months ago. I think it was just a sprain. it went down after a month or 2 or at least i stopped noticing the pain. but just last week i like reinjured it. And it went down a little when i woke up. But now today at practice i hurt it and it hurt more than it ever did before. I can move it so I guess it's still sprained. I was wondering if it turns out that it needs medical attention or something, will I still be able to wrestle with a cast or splint or whatever they have to put on it? Or can I just keep icing it after practice and getting it taped up b4 practice and matches?

    no.

I wanna say icyhot would do it but that only temporarily relieves the pain. Doesn't heal it.

    Thumb injuries suck.

I advise you ask a coach, trainer or doctor what to do. I used to wrestle with (relatively minor) thumb injuries by taping it really well. You can even tape your thumb to the rest of your hand, you can do most of your technique without opposable thumbs.

well my coach and trainer just said similar things. I get it taped up before practice and then I ice it down when I get home after I take a shower and eat dinner.

Imo its a bad idea. The same thing happened to me recently. I went to the doctor and it wasn't broken but I sure sprained it bad. Also the doc said if I injured it again, I might have to have surgery. Its not worth the risk to keep on wrestling. You can just come back strong next season. It sucks because this happened to me right before league duals, regionals, and state so I know how you feel.

youre not gonna need a cast,i did the same thing about a month ago,and all you did was re-sprain it.if you wrestle, ask the trainer to tape it up......the way you should get it taped is to move your thumb back towards your wrist while keeping your hand straight, then get it taped so the tape pulls the thumb back towards the wrist all together.this way your thumb cant move forward and risk another injury

I'd just tape it flat against your hand as arm-spin suggested during practice and only tape it as ryguy says for matches.

I used to have a problem with thumb sprains and dislocations and that's how I got through the season a few times. Once I got used to using my hands as hooks and not using my thumb as much, I didn't hurt my thumb nearly as often.
