I'm a senior at my high school and am on the varsity team as a 1st string, it's my third year on varsity. I've been doing this for a while now but it's always great to have other people's outlooks on training and working out for the sport, so my question to you is: How do you focus your training for wrestling? You might wonder what in the world that means...well, for example, when I'm training, my main priority is to try and go all out while we are doing live wrestling. I really focus all I can. So I put actual wrestling as my first priority to build up conditioning. Afterwards I focus on learning and the application of technique Third I focus on cardio, usually sprints, ect. ( I stopped long distance running) And Fourth, Weight Lifting. So 1. Live wrestling, 2. Technique, 3. Cardio, 4. Weights Is this what I should do? I'm planning on making it to state this year so I've got to work out hard. Another thing, you know how they say to do weights every other day, well I'm thinking on my off days where i'm not doing weights is when I should do my cardio, meaning my sprints and burpees (of course all of this after wrestling practice). Thanks for reading and happy wrestling! Peace. |

I'm a junior in highschool currently. During the wrestling season I do live wrestling, drilling (technique), cardio (sprints, long distance runs) Offseason I do live wrestling, cardio (long distance), weights - I like to do weights 3/4 times a week. I really focus on a couple muscle groups a day, but work the heck out of them. Its not healthy to workout everyday, because you could injure yourself. |

1 application of Technique 2 Technique 3. Conditioning+Weights 4. Cardio I really don't see how conditioning can be separated from weights or cardio. in my mind, weights+cardio=conditioning. I guess if cardio is purely separate from conditioning in that cardio is just aerobic,as opposed to conditioning aspects of cardio and weights, then i would put pure cardio last. In terms of weight lifting, i do not like focusing on select muscle groups because i believe that is not the best way to train for wrestling. Pretty much every move in wrestling utilizes multiple muscles simultaneously. I do focused muscle exercises about once a week for injury prevention, but for my wrestling training lifting, i focus on large muscle group and full body explosive lifts. |
