When you sport a target as big as Cody Phillips (No. 9 @ 112), it is just a matter of time before someone hits it.
On Saturday, Mason Todd found the bull?s-eye.* The junior from Pendleton Heights bagged what was arguably the biggest upset in the state during the IHSAA individual wrestling semistate at Chrysler Fieldhouse.
Phillips, a two-time state champion at 103 pounds, sustained the first loss of his high school career in the 112 championship match. Todd halted Phillips? win streak at 133 after a 7-2 victory.
?I know he?s watched me wrestle a bunch,? Phillips said. ?He came out there and had a better game plan than me and just out-wrestled me. But I will see him again next weekend.?
Phillips (39-1) and Connersville?s Cody House, who placed fourth at 130, advanced to the state meet. The top four in each weight class moved on.
The first round begins at 6 p.m. Friday and competition continues at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
?This is not the end of his run for four state championships,? Union County coach Dan Briggs said. ?We got film and we will work with it. Change the way we do it and hopefully get a different result next time.?
