The road to a North Carolina dual-team wrestling championship has gone through Winston-Salem the past four seasons. It went through there again Thursday at the 4A West region final.
But the dual-team meet wasn?t over after the Parkland Mustangs beat the Lake Norman Wildcats 42-27 to pick up their 215th -consecutive win.* The coaches shared some words over a possible video scandal, and wrestlers almost got into a fight while shaking hands.
The Mustangs accused the Wildcats of sending a parent to video tape Parkland?s first two playoff matches Tuesday.* Parkland coach Maurice Atwood said he notified the North Carolina High School Athletic Association of the incident.* It was later found out the videographer was not from Lake Norman.* Fore said the person was from Raleigh.
?I just wanted to make coach Atwood know that I would rather compete and lose than cheat and win,? Wildcats head coach Morgan Fore said.
The Mustangs forfeited the final three matches Thursday against Lake Norman.* Atwood said Wildcat wrestlers? remarks after receiving forfeits were ?unbecoming.? He did not know if those remarks sparked the post-match incident.
?I don?t know what happened with that,? Atwood said.
The Wildcats, the No. 2 team in the state in*retrorankings.com?s coaches poll, went into a match as underdogs for only the second time this season. The Mustangs did what they have done the past four years ? they won. The Mustangs got out to a 30-0 lead after seven matches. Mike Hayes got a 16-5 major decision for Lake Norman.* He beat Miguel Comacho.
