Who's your state's best wrestler? What are his achievements on the state and national level?
How about the best team?
Wrestler: Tough call. I'd probably say Hunter Stieber, but it could be any of the 3 Monroeville wrestlers. Felipe Martinez is also right there and may well be Ohio's best HS folkstyler, but he doesn't compete in the offseason, so I won't give him the nod right now. Stieber's credentials: 3x Ohio State Champ (139-2). 1x Ironman Champ, 3x Finalist. 1x Fargo Champ, 2x Finalist (in two tries). His only two scholastic losses have come in the Ironman finals.
Team: Graham until proven otherwise. St. Ed will make a serious push for this accolade this year, though.
See my 2 new posts in the High School section the PIAA mini-preview for both AAA & AA. So many to choose from....
for us here in Louisiana, hands down the best team is Jesuit. They have not placed lower than 2nd as a team since 1980. As for the best wrestler, I personally would say Scott Gibbons. he won fargo Greco this past year, took 3rd at fargo in freestyle, won his first state title last year as a sophomore. The other top wrestler is Mark Pinero. he placed 3rd in fargo for Greco and 5th in freestyle just this past year, he won his first state title just this past year as a junior. There are definitely a few other that deserve to mentioned for Louisiana wrestling but those stand out. Mark is definitely more dominant in wrestling style but Scott wrestled up a weight class and didn't cut weight to win at 160 as a sophomore.
Conner Schram 10th Canon McMillan 103
2x Nico Megaludis 12th Franklin Regional 119 (PSU recruit)
Steve Spearman 11th Erie McDowell 130
Kenny Courts 12th Central Dauphin 171 (looking @ tOSU, Maryland & PSU)
2x Jimmy Gulibon 11th Derry Area 125 (PSU after him)
Cody Wiercioch, 10th Charleroi 152/160
Zain Retherford, 10th Line Mountain, 112
Mason Beckman, 12th, Reynolds, 125 (Lehigh recruit)
Nick Roberts, 11th 112 (National HS champ)
Plus national Prep school champ Jason Luster & Fargo Champion as 8th grader Chance Marstellar.
Right now I would have to pick either Megaludis or Courts as the #1 wrestler out of PA this year.
If you are going by numbers of titles then Megaludis. He is very quick & is relentless. He has done well in National Tournaments. However Courts is so strong & coming out of the same program that gave us the Peppleman brothers & several State championships & State duals titles.
The more I think about it the more I start considering some of the other good talent I have watched recently, Brooks Black (PA kid going to Blair) @ 285, Jason Luster @ 152 Kiski Prep & even mason Beckman @ 119 Reynolds, (AA so unless he wrestles Megaludis @ a preseason tourney they won't meet), defending Ironman champ.
Last year's class was ridiculous but you could still probably take the top wrestles in the HS competition NOW & make a competitive college team out of them.
You also have to like a Sophomore who is returning champion in Cody Wiercioch. The kid is such raw talent. And you have to like a FRESHMAN who is already a National Champ in Chance Marstellar who I profiled as much as I could, months ago, in my Faces in the Crowd thread.
So really Jake I don't have an answer @ this point. Think about last year. Who out of PA would you have picked as the number #1 kid? Peppleman? Either of the Altons? Kindig? Tough Qs to answer I think.
